The Bryan College Lions (3-16, 2-8) scored their second conference victory of the season Saturday night at Summers Gymnasium in a 65-61 slugfest with the University of Virginia at Wise Cavaliers (6-15, 3-7).

Despite fouling out three players, the Lions ended a seven-game losing streak by forcing 20 turnovers and tallying 13 steals. Bryan senior Versell Wells led the Lions in the effort with 18 points, seven rebounds and six steals.

The Lions leaped to an early 9-2 lead. Though Wise rebounded to an 11-10 advantage midway through the first half, it was the last time they saw the lead.

Bryan held a 30-22 edge at the half, having completed 44.8 percent of its shots compared to the Cavaliers’ 30 percent.

Though their visitors tried to make a comeback in the second half, the Lions held off the surge, hitting nine-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes to preserve their lead.

Sophomore Lion Kyle Terry netted 12 while senior Jerome Stancil posted 10 and freshman Alex White tallied eight points and eight assists

The Lady Lions (16-5, 9-1) also recorded a victory, roaring past the Lady Cavaliers (4-17, 3-7) 67-54 earlier Saturday night.

The Bryan women powered their way to a 35-19 lead by halftime before turning down the burners in the second half.

Senior Brittany Swanson led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds while classmate Sarah Coffman pulled down 12 rebounds and netted 14 points. Junior Kellie Thurman contributed 13 points and six rebounds, and sophomore Ashley Gray tacked on seven points and seven steals.

The Lions travel to Montreat College on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
