Lady Lions win AAC Tournament, return to NAIA nationals
The Lady Lions basketball team scored three solid victories to take the Appalachian Athletic Championship tournament title the week of Feb. 26, and earn a return trip to the NAIA national championship tournament.
Coach Matt Bollant's charges won the first tournament championship in Lady Lions’ history with their 63-45 win over Milligan. Earlier they defeated Union 79-66, and Virginia Intermont 63-51 to earn their way to the finals.
The Lady Lions will leave for the NAIA tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, on Sunday, March 6. Their first game is set for March 10, against the Doane College Lady Tigers from Crete, Neb.
Heritage Week
Alumni and friends of Bryan are invited to celebrate Heritage Week March 14 to 18, with three special chapel services, a student-directed art exhibit and other activities at the college.
Dr. Richard Cornelius, '55, co-chairman of the 75th anniversary planning committee, said Heritage Week will be the formal kick-off to a year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Bryan College, the 145th anniversary of William Jennings Bryan’s birth on March 19, 1860, and the 80th anniversaries of the Scopes Trial, Bryan's death, and the incorporation of the Bryan Memorial University Association.
A highlight of the week will be the chapel service on Monday, when the college will dedicate the Administration Building as Mercer Hall in memory of Bryan’s fourth president, Dr. Theodore C. Mercer, who served from 1956 to 1986. Faculty, staff, students and alumni, including Dr. John Mercer, '74, Dr. Mecer's son, will participate in the service which will review the college's history, with particular attention to the Mercer era.
On Monday and Tuesday, four first-edition books by John Newton, author of "Amazing Grace," will be on display in the Alice Mercer Humanities Room in the library. The books, provided by alumni Dr. Ronald, '65, and Lois, '64, Zartman, are autographed and inscribed by the author.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, former vice president for student services Dr. Kenneth A. Epp will speak in chapel on William Jennings Bryan's theology, its impact on his educational philosophy and their application.
On Wednesday, President Dr. Stephen D. Livesay will unveil a painting of six campus buildings by Susan Cassidy Wilhoit. Among the images are Mercer Hall, the Octagon, White Chapel and Rudd Auditorium.
"Reflections," a student-sponsored art show, will be on display throughout the week in the library atrium. Students have asked the artists to describe how "heritage" is reflected in their work.
Chorale on Tour
Bryan's Chorale will be on tour through Florida and Georgia during the college's spring break.
We invite you to attend a concert if the group has a stop planned near you. For full information about concert locations, please call the number listed for each site.
To whet your appetite, we would like you to see a comment from a friend who recently heard the Chorale in concert:
WOW! What a superb concert the Bryan Chorale and Chamber Singers gave Sunday evening. From the moment they encircled us to the final selection with Bryan alumni joining in, my heart was full with many emotions, but mostly for the love of Jesus Christ, a wonderful appreciation of arrangement of music and voices and a yearning to get back into my own practicing and singing of God’s words. As I mentioned to Glen Hentz that evening, you will never know how you ministered to me that evening. Your love and passion for Christ and the students came through, and God has richly blessed this ensemble due to that.
