Alumni of the Year 2010

Gary Conner, '79, right, was named Alumnus of the Year, in recognition of his support of the college. Gary has been involved with resurrecting the track and cross country porgram and has been a supporter of the Bryan Opportunity Program, this past year serving on the Host Committee. He is a vice president with Unum insurance company.
Nathaniel Goggans, '00, left, was named Young Alumnus of the Year. Nathaniel, an attorney with the Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel law firm, has been a supporter of the Bryan Opportunity Program and has served on the Host Committee. He recently was elected to the Tennessee trucking association's board of directors.
Michael Palmer, associate professor of communication studies, was named an Honorary Alumnus of the College. Michael has taught at Bryan for nearly 20 years and has worked with the soccer and rugby teams. His two children are alumni.

Alumni of the Year 2009

Henry Barrios, left, and Sandy ZensenHenry Barrios, ’04, received the inaugural Young Alumnus of the Year Award. Since his graduation, he has earned a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences, taught three years in public schools and this year is teaching at a Christian school in Houston, Texas.

He has earned his regional and national coaching licenses for soccer, and is affiliated with Sports Quest Soccer, an organization that uses soccer to reach young people for Christ. He has maintained his ties to the Bryan soccer program, assisting with pre-season camps and scouting potential players.

 

 


Mary Frances Rudd Carlson, ’67, was named Alumnus of the Year. President Livesay pointed out that Mrs. Carlson’s family has a “long and rich legacy with the college.” Her father served as Bryan’s third president. Mrs. Carlson earned a Master of Science degree in business education and taught at Motlow State Community College, eventually serving as director of continuing education and evening instruction. She also taught for 19 years in Knox County Schools. Since her retirement in 1999, she has been an active volunteer in her church and community.

President Livesay said Dr. Carlson “has been a wealth of ideas and recommendations over the years” since he and Mrs. Carlson were married in 1987. The Carlsons have worked tirelessly over the years to support and promote the college.”

Alumnus of the Year 2007

Jackie Perseghetti, '82, is a wife and mother, has been married to her husband for more than 23 years, and home schooled their two children, one of whom is a college graduate and the other is a junior in college.

 

 
Jackie is a prolific author who has written a best-selling devotional book and its sequel, followed this year by another devotional series. In between, she has contributed articles and stories to Clubhouse, Single Parent, Godly Businesswoman, Evangelizing Today’s Child, Hearts at Home, and Kids Pray magazines, as well as developing curriculum Bible lessons, primary church and vacation Bible school units.
 
She has led workshops at national conferences, spoken at young author days for public and private schools, mother-daughter banquets and has done live radio interviews and call-in shows.
 
Jackie has managed to accomplish all this while serving as a volunteer worker for Girl Scouts, 4-H, a soup kitchen, AWANA, playing drums for her church worship team and a Christian Big Band group, and serving as a marriage mentor to young women.
 
Our Alumnus of the Year is a 1982 graduate of Bryan College who earned her degee in Christian Education, and was a member of the “Red Beret Club.” She said not to ask about that one. She has stayed in touch with Bryan through the years, hosting Worldview Team visits to her hometown as well as other students at various breaks in the school year. Her daughter is a member of the Class of 2007, and our honoree has just been elected president of the Dayton, Ohio, Bryan Alumni chapter.
