Summit Tennessee underway at Bryan

More than 270 students will spend the next two weeks at Bryan’s Summit Tennessee conference, studying how to articulate a biblical worldview, practicing what they learn, and having a good time while they do it.

Anna Downer Youngs, one of the Summit coordinators on campus, said speakers including Summit President Dr. Jeff Myers, author and speaker for Summit John Stonestreet, Bryan professors Dr. Ken Turner and Dr. Beth Impson, and alumnus Ben Williams will challenge students to critically engage the culture which surrounds them.
 
“Summit emphasizes thinking well, understanding the biblical narrative and how that applies to all areas of life,” Mrs. Youngs said. “Topics students will consider during Summit include economics, politics, abortion, and postmodernism among others, all ideas in our culture that we as Christians need to view through the biblical metanarrative of creation, fall, and redemption.”
 
Students will spend mornings in lectures dealing with contemporary issues, how to respond to ideas which are contrary to a biblical worldview “and how to love people who disagree. We want them to be able to express their viewpoints logically and effectively,” she said.
 
Afternoons are spent in activities such as service projects in Dayton, hikes in the Laurel-Snow Pocket Wilderness or whitewater rafting. In the evenings, small groups meet with counselors to discuss the day’s ideas and to explore their relevance to students’ lives.
 
During the first week of the two-week student program, an Educators Conference also is underway. Some 70 teachers in this program are learning how to teach worldview studies and why that is an important subject, Mrs. Youngs said. “We are giving them a vision to take back to their schools to include worldview in their curricula.”
