The Lady Lions suffered two tough losses in North Carolina
October 22-23, 2004
Friday night, the team traveled to Montreat College to take on Conference #2 Montreat College. After falling behind 15-5 in game 1, the team settled down to play even with Montreat. MC prevailed in game 1, 30-17. Game 2 was a huge game, with BC leading most of the way and a chance to win at 29-27. But the Lady Lions could not capitalize, and had to fight in overtime before losing 39-37. BC hung tough with Montreat in game 3 before missing two serves in a row at 20-20, giving Montreat a 4 point cushion which they refused to relinquish in winning 30-24. The BC Offensive attack was distributed pretty evenly, with Abby Humphrey tallying 10 kills, and both Kim Barlow and Rebecca Rusch finishing with 9 kills. Randi Mellon had 29 assists.
Saturday, the Lady Lions never led in their loss to #3 Brevard College. Brevard won 30-25, 30-15, 30-22. The Lions seemed rattled the entire game. "I tried to make a defensive adjustment, but it looks like the change may have disrupted much of our playing system. It was a costly mistake on my part," said Coach Sayles.
The Lions are currently seventh in conference, one game behind Union, and two games ahead of Milligan. The Lions should make the conference playoffs, but face some crucial games and must find the win column again if they hope to reach .500 or do any damage in the playoffs. The Lions are now 6-8 in conference, 8-12 overall. Conference play continues this week: Tuesday, the Lions travel to Covenant, where CC seeks revenge on the Lions' homecoming win. The Lions finish their travel schedule this weekend at King, Milligan, and Virginia Intermont College.
