English Department

The faculty of the English Department at Bryan College all share a very simple perspective on Rhetoric and Literature. While we like making the study of language and literature enjoyable, we also approach each course we teach with a dedication that is intellectually rigorous and demanding and which grows out of an abiding love for each subject.

We expect students enrolled in courses we teach to develop that same rigor. To that end, we are both broad and deep in treatment of the subject matter for each course. We also want students to learn to express their ideas through clear, persuasive writing—to be "able to make a defense for the hope that is within" them. We believe that a critical element in "making a difference in our world" is developing the ability to say what we mean and to mean what we say, and we place a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking skills which will make that possible.

That said, one of the most distinctive features of the English Department at Bryan College as a whole is the close, personal relationship we tend to develop with students. We think we have something special in our department, and we thank you for being interested in it. If you have questions or just want to talk, feel free to contact any of the faculty or come by the Writing Center located on the third floor of the Latimer Student Center (LAT 310).

Sincerely,
Dr. Raymond Legg
