Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers courses which cultivate mental habits of accuracy and logical reasoning, develop the ability to communicate ideas in the language of mathematics, foster a knowledge of the place of mathematics in the history of the world, and equip students to use modern computer technology.
Greetings from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science!
Welcome to our portion of the Bryan College web site. We hope you enjoy your "virtual tour" of Bryan. Currently there are three faculty members who are full-time in our department:
Dr. Phillip Lestmann, chairman (mathematics) (at Bryan 1977-1986, 1989-present)
Dr. Bob Simpson (mathematics) (at Bryan 1982-present)
Mr. Earl Reed (computer science) (at Bryan 2000-present)
Our department offers three tracks within the Mathematics major. The Foundation Option offers a pure mathematics major. This lays a good foundation for graduate school or a career requiring a mathematical background. The Secondary Licensure Option equips graduates to teach at the middle school, junior high, or high school level. The Applied Mathematics and Informatics is a hybrid major which joins mathematics and computer science courses.
The department has a full Computer Science major. We have also teamed up with the Business Department to offer a major in Management Information Systems. Please see the Computer Science portion of this website.
We are very excited about being in offices and classrooms that were put into service in the fall of 2001. Everything is state-of-the art, including high-tech presentation systems ("SmartBoards") in every classroom and specially equipped computer laboratories.
We want to encourage you after your web site tour to plan an actual visit to our campus. Come see what is going on at Bryan and meet our faculty, staff, and students. We believe that you will be very impressed with Bryan as a college and with our department as well.
Feel free to contact me by phone (423 775 7261) or email (lestmaph@bryan.edu)--or even in person--if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Phillip Lestmann
Chairman
