Renfroe breaks record while leading Bryan to key conference wins
Robin Renfroe capped off a tremendous week of play by leading the Lions in victories Friday against UVA-Wise and Saturday against Bluefield College
Bryan cruised to a 3-0 victory over visiting UVA-Wise 30-18, 30-20, 30-19. Strong serving and solid receptions were key factors in the match. The Lions served 92 percent with 10 service aces, and committed no reception errors. The Lions kept control of the match with an efficient offense that scored off serve-receptions and key transition defense as well.
“We came into this game with the desire to gain control of our serve-receive game again, and I can honestly say we did that well, and served tougher then we have the past couple of weeks,” commented Bryan’s Coach Leo Sayles. “We were a little off early in the match tonight in our block and back row defense, but it was not a major problem due to the strong offensive play we had.”
The Lions offense was efficient, hitting .240 on the night. Amber Smith led the Lions with 14 kills, .521 hitting percentage, and 6 service aces. Abby Humphrey had another strong offensive night, finishing with 12 kills, .267 pct, and 3 aces. Jenny Loveday dished out 29 assists on the night.
The Lions cranked on all cylinders in a lopsided 3-0 (30-21, 30-9, 30-14) win over Bluefield College on Saturday.
The Rams hung tough in game one, overcoming an 18-8 deficit to pull within 2 at 23-21. After using his second time-out, Bryan’s Coach Sayles finally settled his team and they did not shut down until the final whistle.
The Lions’ Robin Renfroe put on a show, tallying 16 kills and setting a school record in hitting percentage. Jenny Loveday and Hannah Suits combined for 35 assists on the day, while Amber Smith added 3 more aces to her stats.
“This was a great way to go into fall break. Not only did we execute well, we were sharp with our reserves on the court as well,” commented Coach Sayles.
The Lions are on fall break the next week, and will return to action on Oct. 21 when they travel to Brenau University for a tri-match.
Renfroe was named AAC player of the week for her accomplishments in Saturday’s match against Bluefield. The sophomore middle blocker from Northport, Ala., set a record, hitting16 out of 22 attack attempts, with no errors. Her .727 hitting percentage shatters the previous record of .591, set last year by graduate Kim Barlow. Coach Sayles commented, "Robin has been incredibly hot over the past 5 or 6 matches, but this was unexpected. She was unstoppable. We removed her from the match early in the third game, otherwise she could have broken her PR of 18 kills as well. After I saw the stat totals for her, I took the video myself and tallied all stats again to confirm that her percentage was correct, so this percentage has been confirmed. Robin's match was the best hitting display I have seen since I have been at Bryan!"
Renfroe is nominated for Regional and National honors as well. See the write-up at the AAC website: http://www.aacsports.com/article/281.php
