Bryan Volleyball reaches 20 wins with weekend sweep

The Lady Lions Volleyball team cruised to 2 victories Saturday in a trimatch at Brenau University with the host school and Bethel College of Tennessee.
 
In the first match, the Lions avenged an earlier loss to Bethel with a 3-0 victory (30-26, 30-22, 30-19). Abby Humphrey led the charge with 12 kills and 13 digs. Bethel hung tough in game one, coming from behind several times before the Lions broke the final tie at 26-26 to put the game away. The Lions controlled games 2 and 3 to complete the sweep.
 
The Lions had a 30-minute break, then returned to action to face host Brenau for the first time, winning with a 3-0 victory (30-18,30-19, 30-26).
Robin Renfroe, coming off a school-record breaking performance in hitting percentage last week, gave Bryan's Coach Sayles his first 20-win season at Bryan as she led the Lions with 16 kills and 4 blocks in the match. Kaylin Carswell and Gabrielle Claxton were a combined 10 for 25, hitting .345 from the right side. Renfroe continued her excellent offensive run throughout the day and also stepped up defensively, tallying 25 kills (.571 pct) and 9 blocks in the two matches.  Abby Humphrey hit 21 kills (.301 pct) with 24 digs on the day, and Gabrielle Claxton collected 13 kills in the two victories. 
 
The two victories give the program its first 20-win season since 1998, the second 20-win season in 17 years. 
The Lions, now 20-8 (10-2 in conference) return to conference play with 6 crucial matches. Seeking to maintain their second place standing, the Lions must travel to local rival Covenant College for a crucial match Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
 
The team will follow the Tuesday match with matches against the other five of the top six teams in the AAC over the next two weeks.
