Bryan College Writing Center Distinctives

The Writing Center supports scholarly achievement across the Bryan College community. Recognized as a model of student-centered collaborative learning, the Writing Center connects writers and readers throughout the writing process to encourage three primary goals.

1. Initiate and sustain one-to-one writing development with peer consulting and mentoring. The Writing Center fosters a professional environment where students test their initial observations, clarify their developed ideas, reflect upon their strengthened awareness, and perfect the style and tone of their completed assignments. Recognizing that students require rhetorical flexibility during their educational journey, the Writing Center supports each step of the writing process with trained consultants from various disciplines across the academy.

2. Combining theory and pedagogical awareness with practicum experience strengthens consultant training in the Writing Center. Posited as a co-learning incubator where students improve their writing and reading skills, writing consultants complete many hours of classroom study in composition theory and collaborative pedagogy in preparation to become a Writing Center consultant.

3. Encouraging faculty support and participation throughout Bryan College ensures students and Writing Center staff a successful outcome. Partnering with individual Bryan faculty members while assisting students throughout the writing process offers writing consultants a unique opportunity to engage student-teacher and teacher-student strategies. At Bryan College, writing is a hallmark of learning.
