Season Opens Against Brewton-Parker

Bryan College Men's Soccer opened its 2007 campaign tonight in convincing fashion with a 6-0 drubbing of Brewton-Parker College. It was a team effort as 23 players saw action in a match that was marked by high pressure applied by the Lions throughout the game.
The Lions quickly jumped on their opponents as Brazilians Jota da Silva and Mano Silva combined in the 10th minute to open a one goal lead. Mano Silva coolly finished off a ball pulled back nicely from the end line by Jota. Jota will not need to put Mano on his Christmas gift list this year as that is already taken care of.
In the 14th minute, Diego Taucano extended the lead to 2-0 with a finish-off of a ball swung in by Curt Hays from the right side. Jota da Silva made it 3-0 with a beautiful left-footed drive from outside the box. In the 41st minute, the Lions tallied again as Reggie Parks worked hard to cross a ball to freshman Steve Perry, racing to it at the far post, culminating in a diving header. First half scoring ended with freshman Jacobo Gallardo punching the ball in from eight yards after a scramble in the box.
In the second half, Bryan showed its depth as it continued to pressure Brewton- Parker and was rewarded in the 70th minute as Scott Davidson set up Jota da Silva for his second goal of the night. The Lions continued to press and created many more opportunities offensively.
The Lions defenders had a stellar evening anchored by Nate McCown and Kyle Wagley in the middle and newcomer Daniel O'Kane along with Chris Kloc on the outside. Along with good support from defensive substitutions, the Lions did not allow a shot on goal in the game. Carlos Sanchez and Josh Courtwright shared duties in the goal for the Lions.
Head Coach Sandy Zensen was pleased with the effort the Lions displayed and is optimistic about the season ahead. "This was a good start for us. We have a lot of work to do and many areas to continue to improve in, but I was pleased with our effort tonight. These guys have worked hard through training camp and our coaching staff and I are looking forward to the season that lies ahead. "
The Lions are now 1-0 (0-0 AAC) and will host Johnson Bible College on Tuesday, August 28, at 7:30 pm.
