Sumter, SC-- The Lady Lions of Bryan College traveled to Sumter, SC on Saturday for a match-up with the Morris College Lady Hornets. Coming off a big victory at home against NAIA Division I opponent Martin Methodist College earlier in the week, the Lady Lions were eager to take the floor and keep the momentum going.
After a long trip to South Carolina, the team stepped into a gym they’d never played in before, and it was apparent to both the Lady Lions and first year Head Coach Jamy Bechler that they were in for a battle. The first half went back and forth between two well coached teams looking for quality wins.
Trailing 33-32 at the half, the Lady Lions, led by Junior Katie Davis(19 Pts,7 Rebounds) and Sophomores Hillary Tipton(14 Pts, 11 Rebounds) and Courtney Swanson(13 points), outscored their opponents 40-33 in the second half. Junior Ashley Gray had 11 assists to go along with her 6 points. Though Bryan struggled offensively, shooting just 21 of 61 from the floor, they held their opponents to just 37% shooting and played well enough to win on the road.
Bryan Coach Jamy Bechler had this to say about the game, “Morris is a quick team and we felt good about escaping South Carolina with a win. It is always tough when you travel a long distance and play in front of a hostile and unfamiliar crowd. It was a close game and it was nice to see our girls dig down deep and pull out another win. Hillary(Tipton) played with much more energy this game and Katie(Davis) had another good overall game both offensively and defensively as well as rebounding. KeKe Bean also sparked us with her defense. It is nice to see our team beginning to establish a tough mentality and an ability to win basketball games.”
