Lady Lions Fall To Covenant 64-51

February 16, 2008

Dayton, TN—The last time the Lady Lions hooked up with the Covenant College Lady Scots, the two teams competed in one of the best games of the year. Covenant defeated the Lady Lions 53-52 on Lookout Mtn. and set Bryan on a 6 game winning streak that revived the Lady Lions’ season and set up a highly anticipated rematch on Saturday afternoon.
Covenant had managed to climb the ladder to the top of the Appalachian Athletic Conference, while the Lady Lions hot streak had propelled them back into the mix and the middle of the conference standings. The game was also a matchup of two of the AAC’s top offensive threats in Covenant guard Liz Martin and Lady Lions star guard Katie Davis.
Covenant jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking a 31-22 halftime lead despite being held to less than 30% shooting from the floor. The Lady Scots used 14 first half offensive rebounds to build the 9 point lead. Bryan was led in the first half by Davis’ 7 points and 4 rebounds, while Martin led Covenant with 11 first half points.
The Lady Lions would try to make a second half run, but Covenant proved to be too much, as the Lady Scots spread their offensive production around in the second half and maintained their lead throughout the second half. Katie Davis and Amber Smith tried to pull the Lions back into the lead, but didn’t get much help as Covenant extended its lead. The Lady Scots got 12 second half points from Martin, but it was her teammates who combined for 21 second half points who made the difference in the outcome of the game.  As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the scoreboard read Covenant 64, Lions 51.
Other Notables: Katie Davis finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Amber Smith finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds. The Lady Lions held Covenant to just 34% shooting in the game, but shot just 30% themselves on the night. Liz Martin finished with a game-high 23 points.
