11 Run Fifth Inning lifts Lions past Indiana Wesleyan 13-6!
February 15, 2008
Dayton, TN—Having struggled offensively on the road at Atlanta Christian on Tuesday, the Lions took the field Friday night to open the first of a three game set with Indiana Wesleyan University and exploded for an 11 run fifth inning, eventually defeating the Wildcats 13-6. The win pushed the Lions to 5-3, and set a positive tone for the rest of the weekend.
The Lions used 4 strong innings a piece from sophomore hurler Ben Young and Senior Jeremiah Peters on the mound, before Daniel Bosarge came on in a non-save situation to close out the Wildcats. Trailing 5-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th inning, the Lions chased IWU reliever Kreigh Hirschy, who lasted only a third of an inning, giving up 6 earned runs. The Wilcats brought on another reliever, but the Lions were not done scoring yet, as they plated 5 more runs before being set down to end the 5th.
The biggest blows of the night came in the thunderous 5th inning off the bats of JR Will Newman and Redshirt Sophomore “Downtown” Jonathan Brown. Both Lions’ Batsmen hit 3-run homeruns contributing to the offensive fireworks. The homeruns were the first of the season for both men. Another big hit came on a pinch-hit 2-run single from FR Steven Kilgore. When the dust settled, the Lions had plated 11 runs, and led 12-5.
Peters would do the rest, limiting the Wildcats to just 1 run on 3 hits over the next 4 innings, and Bosarge would throw one inning of perfect relief to finish the game. Final Score: Lions 13-Wildcats 6
