Amber Smith Selected AAC Player of the Week

Bryan College's Junior Opposite Amber Smith was selected AAC Volleyball Player of the Week for her effort in guiding the Lions to a 4-0 sweep of away matches last week.  Smith was unstoppable at the net, hitting .447 with 27 kills in the four matches.  Her 6 solo and 9 assisted blocks frustrated opposing hitters, contributing to opposing teams hitting only .136 against the Lions.  Smith set up match point against Union University then finished the match with a kill on Tuesday, then completed the same feat in Saturday's match against Asbury College. She contributed a key block in the final game against Union College on Friday night as well.

Smith earned 2006 AAC All-Freshman, 2007 NCCAA All-Region and NCCAA National Tournament team awards as a middle blocker, but was moved to the right to provide the Lions with a bigger block and more offensive power.

"Amber is transitioning well to the right side position," commented Bryan's coach Leo Sayles.  "Our first weekend she was still trying to settle in, but she exploded this week.  Her size allows her to go over many blocks and also let's her put up a big block herself.  Her athleticism gives her power on the right that we have not had, and has game-changing potential. I think we are going to continue to see great things from her this year!"

The Lions, now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in conference, are tied for first in conference standings.  The Lions moved to the #1 rated AAC conference team in this week's NAIA poll.  The team returns to action when they host their conference home opener against Montreat College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
