October 14, 2008The Lady Lions volleyball team continues to stay in the national Top Five rankings, holding the #5 spot for the fifth consecutive week. The Lions have remained in the Top Ten rankings all season.
The NCCAA currently ranks Indiana Wesleyan as #1, folllowed by Campbellsville. Both teams are ranked in the NAIA Top 25 as well. Bethel follows in third, then Mount Vernon Nazarene. Bryan is fifth, narrowly edging out Cedarville.
Last year, the Lions lost to a very solid IWU team at the national tourney. Indiana Wesleyan went on to win pool play, but lost to Bethel in the national championship. The Lions lost a close match to Mt. Vernon, and have beaten #9 Asbury. Bryan will face Trinity Christian this week in the St. Francis tourney.
The Lady Lions are ranked highly statistically as well. The team is ranked 3rd in hitting percentage and blocking, 4th in kill average, 6th in aces and 12th in assists.
Several players continue to hold high individual rankings as well:
- Senior MB Robin Renfroe, a 2007 NCCAA All-American, currently leads the NCCAA in blocking, and is 7th in hitting percentage
- Alison Young is 17th in hitting percentage and ranked #20 in aces
- Amber Smith is ranked #12 in blocks per game and #20 in hitting percentage
- Ashley Sours has moved up to #15 in blocks
- Amanda Manke is currently #20 in aces
The Lady Lions, currently 18-3 overall, will take their 8-match winning streak into heavy competition against Ashford University on Thursday, then will compete in the Big Guns Tourney at St. Francis University (Joliet, Il) on Friday and Saturday.
