Bryan 3, Montreat 2

The Lions defeated the Montreat Cavaliers Saturday, making them the AAC regular season champions.  Both teams were playing for the coveted  No. 1 position, creating a very passionate and emotional game.

The Lions struck early, scoring eight minutes into the game.  They were awarded a free kick just outside of Montreat’s box.  Jonathan Houghton quickly grabbed the ball, set it down, and played it to Jacobo Gallardo.  He then ripped a shot, from just outside the 18 that continued curving away from the keeper’s outstretched hand until it hit the back of the net.

Just nine minutes later the Cavaliers scored an equalizer on a ball that was played over the defense to an on-running attacker who pushed it past the keeper and into the goal.

With just over three minutes left in the first half the Lions once again found the back of the net to take the lead again.  This time the goal came from Nate McCown on a rebound off a shot by Carlos “Jota” Pedro da Silva.

The Lions came out hard in the second half, scoring in just under six minutes into the half.  Raphael Correa scored an incredible volley on a rebound off a shot from Ricky Angel.  As the game was coming to an end, the Cavaliers were pushing everyone forward trying to score.  With just three minutes left to play, they found the back of the net for their second goal; but it was not enough.  The Lions won with a final score of 3-2.

The Lions finish the season with an overall record of 11-3-2 and a conference record of 5-1-1.  Their next game will be Saturday, November 1, 7:30 pm, at home--playing the first round of the conference against #8 Bluefield College.
