History of MLK Day at Bryan College
Since January 2005, classes at Bryan have been canceled on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day in honor of a great man who had a vision for community members serving each other. Armed with rakes, windex, and bagged lunches, students and their professors volunteer on community service projects across Rhea County. While projects practically help families, churches, and non-profit groups, they also kindle the unique excitement as over six hundred people pull on their work clothes together and meet their neighbors and respond to Dr. King's challenge: "Everybody can be great because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
