Opera Workshop offers two selections
December 02, 2009
Bryan College’s Opera Workshop will present Act II of “The Marriage of Figaro” and the one-act opera “The Impresario” Friday (Dec. 4), in Rudd Auditorium.
Workshop Director Kim Keck said the class was offered the first time a year ago to give students “experience not only with vocal technique, but to get them on stage and let them work on their acting skills as well.”
The opera selections for Friday’s performance were chosen because “I love Mozart operas,” Mrs. Keck said. “They’re fun, the plots are so complex and there is great diversity of characters.”
Act II from “The Marriage of Figaro” deals with a plot by Susanna, maid-in-waiting to the Countess, to use jealousy to rekindle the Count’s love for his wife. Molly Gehring, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., plays Susanna; Tori Wisthoff, a junior from Bismarck, N.D., plays the Countess; and Dr. David Luther, professor of music at Bryan, plays the Count.
“The Impresario” details the trials of Scruples, the court impresario, in trying to recruit performers for his playhouse. Actions of Mr. Bluff, his assistant, and competing sopranos, Madame Goldentrill and Miss Silverpeal add to his troubles. Scruples is played by Justin Winters, a senior from Rock Springs, Ga.; Mr. Bluff by Matt Albin, a junior from Wright, Wyo.; Madame Goldentrill by Caitlin Hawkins, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn.; and Miss Silverpeal by Kelly Miller, a sophomore from Chicago.
The 7:30 p.m. concert is free, and will be sung in English.
