Kim McKennett, senior music major in piano pedagogy from Port Alsworth, Alaska, won the piano concerto competition at Southern Adventist University November 29.

Seventeen finalists performing on a variety of instruments competed for the opportunity to perform with the Southern Adventist Orchestra in concert Jan. 31, 2010. In the piano category, Kim performed the final movement of the Brahms' Piano Concerto No 1 in D Minor.

“Kim is a wonderful student—hard-working, talented, and most gifted,” said Dr. Sigrid Luther, professor of music. “It has been a pleasure teaching her for the past three years."

In addition to the concerto competition this fall, Kim won first place in the 2008 state collegiate piano solo competition of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association.

She has studied piano since she was 5 years old, including several years when she had to commute from her home in remote Port Alsworth to Anchorage, a trip that took about an hour by air.
