Construction, summer projects keep campus hopping

The Townhouses at Bryan Commons are on schedule for opening in August, and paving of Landes Way is to begin in June, Vice President of Operations Tim Hostetler said recently.

This view, from the road above the soccer practice field, shows the townhouses on the left and the site of the new softball field at right.

In late May, construction workers were busy installing floor coverings and cabinets in Building A, the smaller of the two buildings. Building B, begun shortly after Building A, trails the first but continues on schedule.

“Furniture is scheduled to arrive in mid- to late July, and we expect to be ready for students to move in on schedule,” Mr. Hostetler said.

As earthwork neared completion, workers prepared the base for two more townhouse buildings, to be erected as soon as student population requires and finances permit, he said.

At the same time, workers have completed leveling the new softball field and were to spread topsoil in time for the field to be planted with grass early in June.

Mr. Hostetler said the Operations staff has a lengthy list of projects to be completed before students return in August.

Among these are:

  • Renovations and remodeling to areas in the admissions office.
  • Additional office space in the financial aid office.
  • Construction of a meeting room in Mercer Hall’s second floor lobby.
  • Construction of a patio at Rhea House (a gift of the Class of 1959).
  • Construction of three pads with park benches at the edge of the Grassy Bowl (a gift of the Class of 2010).
  • Renovation of the Clementson House (adjacent to the President’s Home) for use as an art studio.

In addition, workers already have completed renovations adding a waiting area in the business office and have added furniture to “triple” rooms in Huston Hall.
