Spring 2011 Italy Semester

The following professors have taught or will be teaching one- or two-week modular courses in the Spring 2011 Italy Abroad Semester Program at the Saints Bible Institute in San Lorenzo, Italy, February 21- April 22:
The following faculty and staff members served as team mentors for six student teams on the following Break for Change mission trips March 5-13:

  • Assistant Director of Spiritual Formation Ms. Danielle Rebman – Detroit, Michigan
  • Resident Directors Mr. and Mrs. Matt and Katie Williams - Hope for Opelousas, Opelousas, Louisiana

Mr. Bernie Belisle and Mr. Jared Cole took four students to the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Atlanta from March 2 – 5, 2011. While there Mr. Belisle presented along with two other local theatre professors on “The Faith-Based College Theatre Program Roundtable.” While attending the conference Mr. Belisle also attended several workshops on the Chekhov techniques in acting as well as workshops on public relations, theatre season composition, integration of service learning projects in the theatre classroom, and networking with fellow Christian theatre practitioners.  Mr. Cole presented a session entitled “From Russia with Love: A Month in Moscow,” which covered some of the highlights from his trip to Moscow in June 2010 to study at the Moscow Art Theatre School. He also attended sessions about marketing theatre, teaching theatre history, auditioning for Shakespeare, and Christianity in theatre practice. He also participated in workshops on acting techniques including Chekhov, Stanislavski, Viewpoints, Alba emoting, and Commedia Dell’Arte performance.

Dr. Mike Chase attended the SACS/COC (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges) workshop entitled “Recognizing and Responding to Substantive Changes” on March 21, at Maryville College, Maryville, TN.

Dr. Steve DeGeorge was in Europe March 8-15 where he
  • Was the keynote speaker at the March 8-11 ACSI EUROPE Poland-Czech Republic-Slovakia Administrators' Conference held in Budapest, Hungary.  The theme of this year's conference was "Launching a New Generation."  For 15 years, this conference has provided a forum for bringing together educators from these diverse regions for cross cultural connectivity and fellowship and to give a more global view of the Christian school movement.
  • Conducted student teaching observation of Elizabeth Benscoter at the Greater Grace International School in Brasov, Romania.
  • Spoke in chapel at the Christian Baptist High School in Timisoara, Romania.

Dr. Gary Fitsimmons
traveled to the American Library Association Midwinter meeting in San Diego during January, chairing a committee, meeting with vendors, and attending discussion groups and other informative sessions. He also participated in a SACS Substantive Change Onsite Review Committee and had another installment of his quarterly column published: “Small Academic Library Perspective Library Leadership” in The Bottom Line: Managing Library Finances, v. 23 no. 4.

Dr. Ken Froemke recently completed his eighth COC (Commission on Colleges) reaffirmation visit and the third one in the last year. His recent on-site team evaluations were at Kentucky Christian University, Brewton-Parker College, and Southeastern University. He has been the lead evaluator for the QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) and institutional effectiveness on four of these visits.

Dr. Sigrid Luther attended the annual Conference of the Music Teachers National Association March 25-30 in Milwaukee, completing her term as national vice president and member of the Board of Directors. She will continue to direct the 2011-2012 membership campaign. Also attending the conference were piano pedagogy major Alissa Passburg and adjunct professor Mrs. Sally Powell. Dr. Luther will organize the Community Music Festival of BCCMS and Rhea Arts Council (April 29-30), judge for the Cadek Conservatory scholarship auditions April 1, and judge for the Alabama Music Teachers Association competitions on May 13-14.

Dr. Salvatore Musumeci will be co-presenting a paper titled 'This do in remembrance of me’: Wine and the Culture of Consumption in the Works of Giovanni Boccaccio and Geoffrey Chaucer" at the 2011 Sewanee Medieval Colloquium held at the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, April 8-10.

  • March 30 – conducted an online webinar on media influence for the Home School Legal Defense Association
  • April 9 – Speaks at the Alabama Home School Expo, Birmingham, AL
  • April 16 – Delivers the banquet address at the Alpha Delta Founders Day, Topeka, KS

Mrs. Sally Powell has earned the Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) designation from the Music Teacher's National Association in both voice and piano. The NCTM is awarded based on proficiency, pedagogy and achievement, and is widely recognized within the music teaching field.

Mrs. Katy Saynes visited Port Alsworth, Alaska, March 9-17 to observe student teacher Kristen Ferrante in the Tanalian School, a K-12 village school.
