Biography

Dr. Smith joined Bryan College in 2016 and quickly became the Director of Engineering Development, guiding the engineering program through its infancy, from concept to reality. He has designed motors for torpedo propulsion at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, working alongside 2,500 engineers. He has taught math and physics in five different departments at four institutions. Most recently Dr. Smith taught math and physics at North Greenville University, a Southern Baptist school in South Carolina.

In 1995, Dr. Smith graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Physics and in 1997 with a M.S. in Applied Math. In 2005, he earned his M.S. in Physics from the University of Louisville. Also in 2005, he earned his M.Div. from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 2015, he completed a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at the University of Louisville.

Dr. Smith has a variety of research interests. His doctoral dissertation was entitled “Improved Self-Consistency for SCED-LCAO,” which addressed the topic of atomic-scale modeling of structures using a fast algorithm with quantum mechanical flavor. Dr. Smith also has an interest in numerical methods, real analysis, cosmology, and demography. At Southern Seminary, Dr. Smith focused on systematic theology with an emphasis on Biblical languages. His focused research was on the interface between science and Christian doctrine.

Lyle is a minister to college students. During a time of profound change, college students need Biblical truth infused into their lives both inside and outside the classroom. Lyle is grateful to be part of that mission here at Bryan College. He is devoted to his God, his family, his church, and his students. He approaches his work with the motto: “Expanding God’s kingdom one mind at a time.”

When I was considering a move to Bryan College in 2015, God put this question on my mind. What kind of person will you be in 5 years if you work at Bryan? I came to Bryan because the answer to that question is BETTER. God has used my years at Bryan to shape me more into His image. The faculty, staff, and students have worked to sharpen my Christian worldview and focus my obedience to Christ. Bryan College is a special place that God uses to hone His people to His glory. I'm thankful to be part of God's work here.
