Acts Project Interns 2012/13

  Andrew Conn    Birmingham,
England

I am a graduating senior from Cleveland, TN. My major is Christian ministry. I am looking forward to taking part in the Acts Project this summer! I will be serving in Birmingham, England, with an organization called Lifehope. Lifehope seeks to help local churches impact their communities in the large city of Birmingham. During my time there I will be helping a local church with everyday tasks, as well as helping with church activities and ministries. I will also be taking part in community outreach in the church's neighborhood the church. I am excited to see how the Lord will work in the lives of those around the ministry I am able to take part in. This summer will allow me to put into action the ideas about ministry that I have been learning the past 4 years.

Kaylie Connell
Moldova

I am currently a sophomore here at Bryan. I major in psychology with hope to go into counseling or social work. This summer I have the opportunity to go to Moldova where I will be working with kids and the elderly. Moldova is one of Europe's poorest countries in between Ukraine and Romania. I will spend time in villages around the country showing Christ to these people. I do not know what God has in mind but he will be with me every step of the way. Surely, God will do amazing things this summer!

Callie Dawkins
Zambia

This summer I have the wonderful opportunity to go to Zambia with Operation Mobilization. I will be spending most of my time in a rural area called Mpulungu, which is near Lake Tanganyika. I will be working with the missionaries there in various types of outreaches like prison ministries, disabled ministries, orphan day-school, and church planting. My biggest desire in Zambia is to love on the people and encourage them in their walk with the Lord whether that is by praying with the local people, playing games with children, or serving the missionaries already there. I want to be open toward anything that the Lord wants to do with me while I’m there. I am so excited to know the people of Zambia and to grow closer with the Lord.

Claire Friesen
India

I am a Junior from Waxhaw, North Carolina, and I have a Liberal Arts major. This summer I will be going to India to serve alongside the mission Word for the World. We will be working in slums, leper colonies, orphanages, and villages. Missions has really been on my heart for a few years now and I’m especially interested in community development and social work. Working with missionaries in these areas in India will hopefully open my eyes to a lot of different ways in which to love and serve people in a holistic manner. I have no idea what to expect for this summer, but I am so excited to see what God is going to do in all of our lives, and I can’t wait to build relationships with the people we’ll be working with!

Matthew Habermas
Kenya

Since high school, I have felt a desire to go to Africa and work with youth, so it's very exciting that God has allowed me this opportunity  to spend my summer as an intern with Gethsemane International, living and working with youth. I have a passion for youth and discipleship, and I hope to one day be a teacher. I am so glad that God has led me to participate with the ACTS Project for this summer. I am looking forward to forming relationships and serving others cross-culturally and becoming more involved with Christians globally. I expect God will teach me more than I can imagine, and I am going ready to learn.

Joanna Hill
Ireland

I am so excited to going to Ireland this summer with the ACTS project to work with Operation Mobilization: Ireland on their creative arts team. As a double major in English literature and history I have always loved the idea of “story;” I love to hear the story of peoples’ thoughts and experiences and see how that translates into the way they live their lives. In the fall of 2011, I spent a wonderful semester studying abroad in Italy and spent my fall break in Ireland. I immediately fell in love with the people in Europe. After conversing with the people and hearing their stories, I was shocked at the spiritual darkness they lived in. Many of the people I encountered knew the story of Jesus but, despite their knowledge and tradition, they lacked understanding. It was as if they had forgotten what the beautiful churches and cathedrals that surround them once stood for and the truth they once housed. I am so excited to join in the efforts of those who are laboring to live and spread the Gospel to the Irish people—to remind them of greatest story of all.

Lauren Keck
Zambia

The Lord has blessed me with a wonderful opportunity this summer to do missions in Zambia, Africa. I am currently a freshman majoring in psychology, but music and ministry play a huge role in my life.  I am truly grateful unto the Lord for what He is doing in my life and I am beyond excited to see what He will do this summer! I will be partnering with Operation Mobilization and spending time working in schools, a prison ministry, and women’s ministry, etc. I am ready for the Lord to change my life this summer and to serve and share the gospel in whatever way I can. To Him be the glory!

Naomi Lee
Birmingham, England

I am a sophomore from Tullahoma, Tennessee, majoring in biblical studies with minors in music and Greek, and I’m extremely excited about being a part of the ACTS Project. This summer, I will be working with Operation Mobilization at LifeHope in Birmingham, England, and interning with a specific church in that community. Most of my time will be spent doing street evangelism, helping with the musical aspect of church services, and working with youth; and the rest of my time will be used to learn how to better serve others alongside the rest of the international team at LifeHope. I am eager to use my passions for worship leading, the British culture, and getting to know new people during my time there, and I can’t wait to see how God works this summer!

Brad McKeehen
India

I was born and raised in Knoxville, TN. Spending much of my time in church growing up, I felt the call to become a pastor.  In the pursuit of that call upon my life, I attended Bryan College to major in Christian Ministry, and hope to become the head pastor of a local church in Tennessee someday. This summer I will be spending time in Chennai, India, serving and working with Word for the World with Augustine Assir.  While there I will be given the opportunity to preach to the Indian people, serve those who are considered outcasts, and pray as well as spend time with those in the leper colonies. The internship in India will also be counted as my internship that is required for my pastoral ministry major.

Jasmine Mhlanga
India

Hi, my name is Jasmine and I have the great opportunity to visit Chennai, India. I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. I enrolled into Bryan as a liberal arts major and now have a focus in social science. I am excited to see how God uses my major or simply my talents to minister to people in Chennai, India. The India team will be partnering with Word for the World in hope of visiting slum dwellers, leper colonies, and villages. I pray that I have a servant's heart when we talk to people who live culturally different lives, but I also hope we can find similarities that bring us closer as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Emily Moon
Ireland

My name is Emily Moon and I am from Birchwood, Tennessee. Here at Bryan I am majoring in corporate communication and minoring in theatre. I have a real passion and love for people and getting to know their stories, I also  feel like the most effective way to minister to people is through these relationships. This makes me really excited to serve more long term in Ireland this summer. I will be working with Operation Mobilization in Roscommon doing a lot of work and spending time in the community. We will also be working in a creative arts capacity with OM's Big Red Bus ministry. I cannot wait to go and see what the Lord has in store for me in Ireland.

Chloe Pool
Zambia

A few months ago, someone suggested that I consider going to Africa through the ACTS project. While the thought of being so far away from home and my comfort zone initially intimidated me, I began to see more clearly that God’s mission reaches to every corner of the earth and that His children must be willing to step out in faith in reconciling the world to Him. He, after all, is worthy of every ounce of that trust. Around that time, I began to hear more about the country of Zambia and agreed to spend my summer there with Operation Mobilization! As a communications major, I anticipate the opportunity to photograph the incredible work taking place as well as ministering alongside OM Zambia!

Lauren Roberson
Hungary

I am a fourth year history/education major, and in the fall of 2013, I will be student teaching in Vienna, Austria. Teaching overseas will be a great way to gain new experiences, meet new people, and better develop my teaching. There is so much to learn from different cultures, whether it is in a classroom in Dayton, Tennessee, or in a classroom in Vienna, Austria. I have always had a love for travel and God has blessed me with the opportunity to live and to teach overseas.

Katie Smith
Ireland

God is good! This year has been a time of learning and growth for me as I draw nearer to God and seek His kingdom. As I considered and prayed about how to spend my summer, the opportunity to join Operation Mobilization (OM) Ireland in their ministry presented itself through Bryan College. By God’s grace, I will be spending the summer being involved in outreaches to communities and supporting the missionaries at their base. I am excited to see how God will work in and through me to further His kingdom in Ireland. Praise God that He is allowing me to serve Him in this way!

Tommy Stines
India

I am a rising senior from Rhea County, Tennessee, double majoring in Christian ministry and math secondary education.  This summer I will be given the opportunity to partner with Word for the World Ministries, an organization based out of Chennai, India.  I am excited to see the things God will accomplish during my time there.  I have heard great and challenging things about the opportunity to spend two and a half months in India, but I am sure that we will see God work.  As we work with the marginalized people in India I will be given opportunities to see the hand of God move in ways that I have never seen before.  I am excited to see exactly what the Lord will do in our midst.  The opportunity to participate in this counter cultural experience should give me the exposure that I am looking for to begin a career in ministry.  I pray that God would grant me the wisdom to speak truth into the lives of the Indian people and give me the desire to grow through this process.
