Online Math Tutoring FAQs
What can an online math consultation do for me?
At the Online Academic Support Center, we believe that learning comes from practice and being engaged in your class assignments. Working with an online math consultant helps you identify and answer potential questions about your course content so you improve your understanding and skills.
More specifically, if you’re uncertain and nervous about your class, we can help you understand your math problems and assignments. If you feel like you can’t get started, we can guide you through the process and help you organize your thinking. If you have a specific question on algebra or pre-calculus, we can help you find the answer. If you only want to talk through your questions and ideas, we’re excited about discussing them with you.
What is an online math consultation?
An online consultation offers the opportunity to work through your math questions and assignments with a trained tutor. It’s a chance for you to clarify your questions and practice your skills in a safe, supportive environment.
What exactly happens during an online consultation?
We don’t have a checklist of tasks to accomplish in each consultation; rather, we tailor each meeting to our clients’ individual needs. When you email a math consultant to request an online meeting, you should include a list assignments or questions or concerns you have about your class. Your writing consultant will review your email and schedule an online meeting in GoToMeeting, where he or she will respond to and talk through the specific questions you present. In addition, your math consultant will direct you to additional online support materials that will help you develop your analytical and critical thinking skills.
Will my math consultant help me complete my assignments?
We can’t help you complete your assignments because our goal is not simply to help you get a better grade; it’s to help you become a better student and learner. If we do parts of your assignments, you won’t learn how to do that job on your own. Instead, we will help you acquire the skills you need to complete the problems yourself. We will certainly answer any questions you have; we can help you get started on your assignments and guide you through the process. In the end, though, completing your assignments is up to you.
When is an online math consultant available?
Your online math consultant is available 24/7 to schedule meetings via email. You can submit your meeting request and questions anytime during the week. However, individual consultants will have different availabilities for meeting times. Please allow 24 hours for your online consultant to respond to your inquiry and schedule a meeting time.
How do I schedule an online math consultation?
Find and select the online math consultant you wish to use. In your email to the consultant, you should include your class name, carefully list the questions or concerns you have, and also list your preferred meeting times. Please allow 24 hours for your consultant to respond and schedule a meeting.
How many online math consultations may I have per week?
You may request two 30-minute online consultations per week.
Will my professor know that I worked with an online math consultant?
Yes. We will notify your instructor that you completed an online math consultation. Throughout the semester, your instructor may encourage or ask you to work with an online consultant as well.
Are online math consultations only for class assignments?
Yes. You should only submit a request for assistance for assignments you are completing in one of your courses at Bryan College.
