The science of biology reveals an amazingly intricate and beautiful world that reflects its Creator’s glory.
Our majors examine the living world from the bio-molecular to the organismal levels; and they develop skill in the art of experimental design, execution, and reporting. We encourage our students to engage in summer research programs, to volunteer in hospitals, or to participate in internships to gain experience in preparation for further medical, nursing, or graduate studies. Many students work or volunteer at Erlanger Hospital or other medical facilities in Chattanooga or nearby towns during the school year, at hospitals in their own home towns or on the mission field during the summer; and many have worked at research facilities such as the Army’s Medical Research Institute at Aberdeen Proving Ground during the summer or after graduation.
We unequivocally affirm the inerrancy and authority of scripture and seek to develop our students’ abilities to serve God by serving others and by caring for God’s creation.
“For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” Colossians 1:16-17 (NIV).
Students interested in a career as a nurse practitioner may elect the Liberal Arts/Nursing Option as part of our “3+2 Bridge” program with Vanderbilt University. In addition to important foundational courses in biology and chemistry, Students take several liberal arts courses that aim to enhance critical thinking skills, which are needed by nurses in leadership positions. After completing three years of course work at Bryan and two at Vanderbilt (studying one of twelve nursing specialties), students will receive a B.S. from Bryan and an M.S.N. from Vanderbilt.
Secondary Licensure Option
The Biology Secondary Licensure Option prepares you to teach biology in grades 7-12 and is jointly administered with the Education Department. It includes several courses from the Education Department in addition to a broad selection of biology courses.
The Biology Foundation Option will prepare you for entry level careers in biological sciences and provide a foundation for those wishing to enter the medical professions or graduate studies in the biological sciences.
