Chemistry Minor
The Chemistry minor is designed to provide a strong background in fundamental areas of chemistry, particularly for those interested in graduate study in areas that relate to chemistry.
Requirements (26 hours)
-
CHEM 131-CHEM 132 General Chemistry (8 hours)
-
CHEM 241-242 Organic Chemistry (8 hours)
-
Choose a minimum of 10 credit hours from among the following courses:
-
CHEM 331 Analytical Chemistry (4 hours)
-
CHEM 420 Biochemistry (4 hours)
-
CHEM 470 Chemical Research (1-4 hours)
-
CHEM 490 Special Topics (3 hours)
Additional Information
-
You must fulfill the other requirements for a major and for graduation in order to earn a minor.
-
You must earn at least 9 hours of the minor at Bryan College.
-
No grade lower than C- may be counted toward the minor.
-
At least 6 hours must be in courses NOT overlapping with major courses (For a biology major foundation option, the following courses overlap: CHEM 131, 132, 241, 242, 420. For a biology major secondary licensure option, the following courses overlap: CHEM 131, 132.)
-
Please note: Chem 420 has non-chemistry prerequisites (BIO 112, BIO 113, BIO 325). Non-biology majors are therefore advised to take CHEM 331, CHEM 490, and CHEM 470 in order to fulfill the electives requirement.
-
You must fill out an "Application for Minor" form available from the Registrar's office, and have it approved by the Division Chair.
-
It should be noted that these courses are not always offered every year. See current schedule for details.
-
Please also note that Consumer Chemistry (CHEM 110, 4 hrs) cannot be used as an elective for the chemistry minor, and that BIO 421 is not cross-listed as a chemistry course and therefore cannot be used as an elective for the chemistry minor.
