Philosophy & Culture

All Majors

Overview

This relatively new program fits very well into the historical milieu and the worldview emphasis of Bryan College. It is intended to be a broad-based major incorporating multiple departments, including philosophy, languages, theology, English, history, and political science so that a student gets a wide-ranging exposure to both secular and Christian thought in these arenas.

This is a holistic approach to knowledge and the pursuit of truth, all done within the broad framework of a Christian theistic worldview.

Our Commitment to You

Students can expect to receive a strong, well-rounded foundation as they complete our rigorous program that incorporates many academic disciplines.  For example, there is a strong emphasis in philosophy and the history of ideas when we study original writings of the philosophers and as we fully and freely engage with their ideas during class discussions and in writing assignments.

Our concern is to pursue truth wherever it leads; we examine various worldviews, their claims and their dissonances. Our faculty is committed to the Christian theistic worldview so we study ideas in that context; we seek to provide a safe atmosphere so that students can engage difficult issues of faith in an open and honest way.

We encourage students to get involved in activities like the Bryan College Worldview Initiative, as well as opportunities for internships and worldview conferences. Students attend thought-provoking and challenging lectures sponsored by the Bryan Institute for Critical Thought and Practice. They also take courses in Christian Life Formation because we believe in the development of the whole person, and this includes dynamic spiritual life and growth, as well as struggle.

This major will prepare students to be solid critical thinkers, speakers, and writers who can engage and contribute to good culture formation and the advancement of truth; they will be well-prepared for any career pursuit and/or professional and graduate programs.
