LITERARY AND VISUAL ARTS CONTEST
AWARDS: Certificates, recognition, possible public reading or publication of pieces, and monetary prizes.
ENTRANTS: Full-time students (minimum of 12 hours) during at least one of the semesters in the current 2007-2008 academic year. All entries must be original. Collaboration is permitted on the drama entries, but any prizes will then be divided accordingly.
LITERARY CONTEST DIVISIONS:
Poetry—Short or long poems, each beginning a new page; total of at least 50 lines; can be various forms, including dramatic monologues.
Short Stories—750-4000 words.
Prose: formal essays—750-4000 words
Academic and scholarly essays. Examples would include research essays, literary criticism, essays that might appear in a scholarly journal, book reviews, informative or persuasive essays on issues of the day that are developed primarily through facts and logic, etc.
creative non-fiction—750-4000 words
Personal essays and essays written in a style which uses narrative conventions to build the thesis. Examples would include profiles, reflections, meditations, devotional writing, as well as personal stories that make a point applicable to readers, whether informative or persuasive, etc.
Dramatic Dialogue—750-4000 words.
Hand-Puppet Scripts—1-5 scripts totaling 750-4000 words or about 8-25 minutes of performance time.
Entries may be previously published pieces in The Triangle or unpublished items.
News writing—250-1000 words.
Feature Articles—250-1000 words.
LITERARY CONTEST FORMAT:
(1) Entries should be typed, double-spaced and submitted to Whit Jones in the Latimer Student. Center. 310A by 5 pm, Tuesday, March 31.
(2) Multiple submissions are permitted, but each one should have its own cover sheet as listed below.
(3) Each entry (story, set of poems, etc.) should have two cover sheets as follows:
(a) A cover sheet attached by a paper clip. On the sheet is the writer’s name, college box number or other address, category of entry (story, play, formal essay, etc.), and title(s) of the entry.
(b) A cover sheet stapled to the entry and listing the category of entry and title(s). No name or other identification should be on this cover sheet.
VISUAL ARTS CONTEST:
A separate set of awards is provided by the Dayton Arts League. Two members of the DAL have degrees in studio art and having taught art for many years will judge the art work for this contest.
· The visual arts contest is open to all Bryan students registered for at least nine hours of credit.
· All entries must be original.
· All entries must be matted and framed in a professional manner.
· Photographs must be 8 X 10 inches.
Entries that do not fit the above criteria cannot be accepted.
Categories: pen and ink, charcoal, oil, watercolor, tempera, acrylic, pastel, photography, original print of any process. (Original print means that the entering artist performs all the processes from concept of image to final draft. The finished draft is the entry.)
VISUAL ARTS FORMAT:
An application must be filled out for each entry. These forms will be on the table in the Writing Center outside Dr. Whit Jones’s office (Latimer Student Center 310A). The information you must provide on the form will include the (1) Artist’s name, (2) Bryan Box Number, (3) Category of the entry, (4) Title of the entry, and (5) Specific Media of the entry. Each entry with its application form should be left outside Dr. Jones’s office (Latimer 310A) by 5 pm, Tuesday, March 31.
PICKING UP WORKS: Works may be picked up from Dr. Jones after Friday, May 1.
