Counseling Services and Soul Care

Counseling Services and Soul Care

Counseling is a free service to Bryan College students. Students make individual appointments by contacting Jonathan Doran, counselor, by e-mail, or by contacting Kauri Tallant, counselor, by email. Now that the Department of Counseling and Soul Care has been integrated into the Office for Spiritual Formation, Jonathan's office is located on the 3rd floor of the Latimer Student Center (LAT 303). Kauri is currently working out of Dr. Rose's office in the Psychology Department (MER 235B).

A Word about Counseling and Soul Care

What is Soul Care?

Soul care is a holistic approach to helping others through nurture and support toward healing and restoration, with a particular emphasis on the interior life. While soul care is practiced everyday in the context of friendship and community living (i.e. discipleship), it can at times be helpful within a therapeutic counseling setting. As persons we incur deep wounds that result from living in a broken world, the sin of others, and own sin. These wounds hinder relationships (with God, the self, and others); spiritual and emotional growth; and health of the whole person. The Christian counselor comes alongside another in his or her brokenness and pain with the purpose of facilitating an encounter with Christ in the midst of suffering. In creating a safe place to expose hurts and to seek the true healing that Christ offers, real hope for a life of freedom finally becomes possible.

Counseling services at Bryan College seeks to address the mental health and spiritual needs of students in order that they may continue to be conformed into the image of Christ. Christian counseling is about spiritual formation; the desire of the counseling office is to journey with students through their joys and struggles in this unique season of their lives.
