Online MACS program to launch March 2015

MACS to launch March 2015December 19, 2014 — This coming spring Bryan College will be offering its Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS) program in a fully online format for the first time.

In the past five years the MACS program has gone through two cycles (starting in 2010 and in 2012) graduating 17 students. Since then, the program has undergone considerable revamping under the leadership and vision of William Harle, dean of adult and graduate studies, and Dr. Matthew Johnson, director of graduate education.

The program’s reintroduction, according to MACS Director Dr. Kenneth Turner, has been revitalized and improved, experiencing a dramatic shift in terms of marketing strategy, class interactivity, flexibility, and reach. Dr. Turner said, “We are very sensitive to working a program that will fit as many people as possible in terms of their goals,” adding that the MACS will help equip people to go into many different fields with an in-depth background in Christian studies.

“The point is,” continued Dr. Turner, “to be flexible, to be creative, and to match the needs and desires of people with a program that is versatile enough that they can gain a degree to help them do what they want to do.”

The improved MACS will launch March 31, 2015. As a 36-hour program, it will feature 12 three-hour courses, which at least initially will be offered two at a time. Six of these will count as core classes, after which students will take courses more specifically pertinent to their career field. Typically a student will take two courses every 12 weeks, although they may choose to only take one per term. The courses will involve reading, writing, posting in online discussion forums, viewing mini-lecture presentations with pre-recorded audio from the professors, and ongoing week-to-week conversations both between classmates and between students and their professors, who are deeply invested in mentoring and coming alongside them.

“The online approach enables us to reach people literally around the world who are in ministry now or want to get into ministry,” commented Dr. Turner. “We’re trying to shape a program that will help people go into all kinds of areas, so we’re sensitive to that on every level.”

Bryan awards 142 degrees at fall commencement

Fall '14 CommencementDecember 17, 2014 — This past Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, Bryan College graduated a total of 142 students from the School of Arts and Sciences and from the School of Adult and Graduate Studies (AGS) at the school’s 89th commencement ceremony, witnessed by proud friends and family members.

Dr. C. Jud Davis, professor of Greek and Christian studies and philosophy division chair, gave an encouraging and challenging address drawn from the pages of scripture to the approximately 1000 in attendance in both Rudd Auditorium and the overflow room in the Latimer Student Center. The musical portion of the ceremony, including a singing of “Amazing Grace” and additional special music, delighted onlookers, and Alumni Director Paulakay Hall’s welcoming of the new alumni into the Bryan College Alumni Association garnered applause and laughter.

The Honoris Causa student awards were presented before the long-awaited conferral of degrees to the new graduates. Joanna Hill ‘14, a history and English double-major from Dayton, Tenn., earned the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award. Benedikt Müller ‘14, a politics and government major from Eichstaett, Germany, won the Highest Scholastic Record Award with a 3.978 GPA.

The 26 students from the School of Arts and Sciences to earn their undergraduate degrees were divided evenly between Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts recipients. Of the 116 AGS students, 27 earned their M.B.A.

“It is a tremendous honor for Bryan college to be part of the lives of each and every one of these graduates,” remarked Interim Vice President of Academics Dr. Kevin Clauson. “We are thankful for all the family members, faculty, and staff who have made all of this possible.”

New integrated marketing communication major introduced

Integrated Marketing CommunicationDec. 12, 2014 — Approved by the faculty last week, integrated marketing communication (IMC) will now be offered as a major for a Bachelor of Science degree at Bryan College, effective this coming spring semester.

This new major provides students with the opportunity to choose marketing communications as their field of study, preparing them to enter the workplace with an in-depth knowledge of business and communications. It was born out of a collaboration between Bryan’s communication studies and business departments in response to major shifts in the marketing and advertising disciplines toward targeted digital and interactive media. According to the proposal, this new B.S. in IMC “blends coursework in corporate communications and public relations from the communication studies department with coursework in marketing from the business department.”

Dr. Randall Hollingsworth, humanities division chair and professor, said, “The resulting synthesis of our two departments in the IMC major is a reminder of the old saying, ‘It’s not what you have, it’s what you do with what you have.’ We are excited about the unique and strategic integration of some of our best courses which, as stand-alone courses, are good, but in concert with the IMC package, make an attractive option for those students who enjoy both communication and business disciplines.”

Associate Professor of Business and Secretary of the Faculty Dr. Adina Scruggs ‘91 is also enthusiastic about the new major because of what students will learn. She commented, “IMC combines traditional communication expertise, such as public relations and organizational communication with marketing coursework such as advertising and digital marketing.  IMC, by definition, is the application of consistent brand messages across both traditional and non-traditional marketing channels, both internally and externally. We are excited about this collaborative major that will prepare students to communicate consistent promotional messages in the dynamic marketplace environment.”

The college will still offer the communication studies’ corporate communication option (B.A.) and the marketing option in business administration (B.S.) in addition to the new B.S. major in integrated marketing communication.

CareerShift aids students, alumni in career hunt

Dec. 11, 2014 — Bryan College’s career services department has recently brought on a new job hunting and career management platform called CareerShift, which promises to streamline the daunting task of searching for career possibilities for both current students and alumni.

“I am thrilled to be offering CareerShift to our students!” commented Career Services Director Chelsea Zimmerman. “The platform is user friendly and effective. CareerShift allows students to search for jobs based on various filters of their choice, leaving them with only the best and recent postings.

CareerShift takes the most useful aspects of other job search sites, combines them in a simple format, and allows users to personalize every facet of the search to ensure pertinent results. The platform provides users with tools that manage their job hunt all from a convenient centralized location online, including preorganized tabs labeled “My Jobs,” “My Contacts,” “My Documents,” “My Campaigns,” and “My Calendar.” The program searches all available job listings, including those from job boards and company websites.

Career services has run several demonstrations of the new platform with current Bryan students of different years and fields of study in order to spread the word and to gain valuable feedback. An overwhelming majority of students gave CareerShift a hearty stamp of approval.

After the demo he participated in, sophomore William Stokes said, “It’s like a webpage made just for me.”

Senior Jessalyn Pierce, who is majoring in Biblical studies with a film/media minor, agreed: “I think it’s a great idea and will be used by students as a less stressful and easier to understand system, rather than online public search engines. It’s organized, has no crazy ads, and has all the filtering tools I would want to be able to use.”

Zimmerman said, “This tool also provides students with contact information from employees within a given company or organization which offers students the opportunity to interact beyond the level of simply submitting an application. It is a great addition to our office!”

Bryan College’s accreditation re-affirmed

Bryan College's accreditation re-affirmedDec. 9, 2014 — Bryan College is pleased to announce the decision of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to reaffirm the institution’s accreditation for the next 10 years with a request for a follow-up report on four items to be submitted in September 2015.  The college was notified at the SACSCOC annual meeting in Nashville on December 8, 2014.  This reaffirmation underscores that Bryan College is a financially stable, academically sound institution with the requisite faculty, administration, support staff, facilities, library resources, programs, and financial resources to fulfill its mission.

College president Dr. Stephen Livesay praised the entire campus community for their multi-year effort to achieve this milestone in the school’s history: “This reaffirmation is the result of the diligence and commitment of all our outstanding faculty and staff, led by Bryan’s SACS leadership team.”

Begun in 1930, Bryan College remains committed to its founding as a highly ranked Christian college with its distinctive motto of Christ Above All and a firm reliance on the Bible as the foundation for all of life and learning.

Bryan’s mission of “educating students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world” continues as the purpose for all the programs and activities of Bryan.

Dayton Rotary Club awards scholarships

Dec. 8, 2014 – On Friday, Dec. 5, the Rotary Club of Dayton awarded scholarships to current Bryan College freshmen Kaitlyn Couch and Caleb Zimmerman at the Rotary luncheon on Bryan’s campus.

Rotary Luncheon“This is always one of the highlights of our year as the Rotary Club of Dayton,” said Lebron Purser, the Dayton club’s president. “We are certainly honored and privileged as a club each year to award scholarships to students here at Bryan College.”

College president Dr. Stephen D. Livesay called this year’s recipients “representative of the freshman class.”

Kaitlyn Couch, an elementary education major and theater arts minor from Spring City, Tenn., has a passion for theater and for helping children learn. In high school she was involved in many plays at Rhea County High School and the Tennessee Valley Theater, and as a freshman she has already had a role in the Hilltop Players’ comedy “Rumors” earlier this semester. She has danced ballet for 11 years and now teaches dance to an average of 45 students three days per week. Kaitlyn is excited to graduate from Bryan and pursue a career in teaching.

She commented, “I am absolutely blessed with the aid of the Rotary scholarship,” telling the club members, “I could not thank you enough for the support you continue to show to the students of Bryan College, and I’m especially grateful for this scholarship. I promise you I will do something with it that will make you all proud.”

Freshman Caleb Zimmerman, who is a mathematics and economics/finance double major from Grandview, Tenn., also expressed his deep gratitude for the scholarship: “I’d like to thank the Dayton Rotary Club for your generous investment in my education. Throughout the years you have proven your dedication to the continued education to the children of Rhea County.”

Zimmerman noted that “Bryan is head and shoulders above other colleges, and the professors are the major reason for this excellence,” and also credited his time with the students’ rugby club with helping him to build his character with resolve and loyalty, two values that he will carry with him for the rest of his life. He added, “I will strive to justify the confidence you have placed in my future.”

Dr. Livesay told the Dayton Rotary Club, “Thank you so much for this wonderful gift. This means so much to the scholarship program and, of course, also to Kaitlyn and Caleb; and without this kind of support from the community, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do here. We are very, very grateful.”

Christian Universities Online ranks Bryan no. 3 in best value

Bryan no.3 in value rankingDec. 4, 2014 — In a recent ranking released by Christian Universities Online, Bryan College placed no. 3 with the “50 Best Value Christian Colleges and Universities.”  According to the website this ranking focuses on “the value of certain institutions without letting the financials dominate the landscape” in addition to “[helping] prospective students and parents to look past the sticker price and dig deeper for the net tuition cost.”

Financial Aid Director David Haggard commented, “I believe ‘value’ is the the perfect word to describe Bryan: it is the intersection of affordability and quality. Cheap, mediocre education is readily available. By contrast, what Bryan offers has been clearly recognized over and over again in the rankings as a worthwhile investment that far exceeds the cost.”

This excellent ranking follows on the tail of several others Bryan College has shown impressive results in, which were released earlier this year, including placing no. 7 in the list of “Best Value Schools in the South” by U.S. News & World Report; no. 22 in the “Regional Colleges South Rankings” by U.S. News & World Report; no. 7 in “50 Most Affordable Christian Colleges in the U.S.” by Christian Universities Online; and no. 16 in “50 Best Christian Colleges in the U.S.” by Christian Universities Online.

Bryan offers new M.Ed. program this spring

Dec. 4, 2014 — Last week Bryan College received the go-ahead to begin offering its new Master of Education (M.Ed.) program this coming spring.

Bryan offers new M.Ed. program“Informal conversations regarding the development of a graduate-level degree program in education have been going on at Bryan for a number of years,” noted Dr. Matthew Johnson, the director of graduate education and assistant professor of education and psychology, “but the formal development of the program began in the fall of 2012.” The following year the college’s Division of Social Sciences, as well as the full faculty of the college, approved the finalized program, which was then submitted to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) during the summer of 2014.

Just last month Dr. Belle Wheelan, SACSCOC president, sent Bryan College a letter informing the institution that the Commission had approved the college to offer the Master of Education program starting in the spring of 2015.

Starting March 31, 2015, the program will begin running in a 12-week online format, designed to be accessible, affordable, and convenient for working adults wishing to earn their M.Ed. from a regionally accredited college with a celebrated history of strong undergraduate teacher education programs.

Dr. Kathryn Saynes, department chair and associate professor of education, said, “I’m excited about the online format because it offers a lot of flexibility, but still allows us the opportunity to interact with students. I’m also excited that our students can graduate, begin teaching, and continue on with their education while working anywhere.”

Dr. Johnson agreed: “There are a couple of aspects about the Bryan M.Ed. that I think are especially exciting, and they can be summed up with two words — quality and accessibility. The education department faculty have committed themselves to providing a quality curriculum that is both logistically and financially accessible.”

Christmas concert promises holiday spirit

ChristmasOnTheHillNov. 21, 2014 – Tickets are now on sale for the Bryan College music department’s annual Christmas concert, Christmas on the Hill, which will be jingling into Rudd Auditorium Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6.

The talented Metropolitan Bells group out of Chattanooga, Tenn., will be joining Bryan’s own soloists, brass and flute ensembles, women’s chorus, Chamber Singers, and chorale for an evening of Christmas spirit. The concert promises traditional carols, fresh tunes, and holiday favorites, such as “Joy to the World,” “African Alleluia,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “White Christmas,” and “Breath of Heaven,” along with many, many others.

“The most interesting piece, and one which will be exciting, is the finale,” said Dr. David Luther, professor of music and director of the Bryan College Chorale and Chamber Singers. This breathtaking finale, “Angels We Have Heard on High,” will be performed by the chorale, along with timpani, trumpet, organ, and the acclaimed Metropolitan Bells.

Dr. Luther, affectionately known to his students and alumni as “Dr. D,” admits that preparing for this year’s Christmas concert is a very emotional process for him. He has been involved in each of Bryan’s Christmas concerts for what is now the 37th year in a row. He said, “This will be the absolute final time I will direct the chorale, which I have directed for the last 28 years – and it has been a wonderful honor to have done so!”

Both nights also feature a special optional event – a dinner or a dessert social. Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 P.M. a holiday dinner with a gourmet flair will be served on the second floor of the library; the $20 dinner ticket includes both the meal and a preferred seating concert ticket. Saturday, Dec. 6, alumni are invited to attend the post-concert “Winter Wonderland” dessert social in Brock Hall. Email the alumni office to RSVP for the dessert social.

Three named Staff Members of the Summer

Three named Staff Members of the SummerNov. 11, 2014 — The award of Staff Member of the Summer for 2014 has been presented to Charlene Fonseca, Andrew Smith ’13, and Jeff Eenigenburg. President Stephen D. Livesay expressed the college’s deepest appreciation for and admiration of these individuals for “the great work [they] do day in and day out.”

As an academic advisor for Bryan’s dual enrollment program Charlene Fonseca has played an integral role in drawing new students and parents to the college. Her uplifting attitude and tireless work shows her love for people and for the Lord. One of her nominators commented, “Some people just have that special way that they encourage others. Whether it is via a smile or a kind word, Charlene is one of these.”

Andrew Smith ’13, an admissions counselor, personally counseled more than 70 students from the fall 2014 incoming class (this year’s freshmen). “Many nights he was the last one to leave the office as he would stay late in order to reach students,” noted an unnamed coworker, who also drew attention to Smith’s starting and piloting a personal home visit program, in addition to his spending his week of vacation to speak and counsel campers at the Cedine Bible camp in Spring City, Tenn.

Over the summer Director of Campus Worship Jeff Eenigenburg was asked to plan out all the chapel services for the 2014-2015 academic year, in addition to his normal days’ duties. This sizeable project entailed lining up the speakers, planning out the songs for worship, and making room for announcements, all months in advance. Without hesitation, Eenigenburg gladly agreed to do so and planned out one of the most spiritually challenging and inspiring chapel seasons in Bryan’s recent history.

Each of these three Staff Member of the Summer Award recipients has made an incredible difference in the workplace, and Bryan College is grateful to each for their daily pursuit of excellence.
