The Lions came into this match at home with a three game winning streak and were looking to avenge a 4-1 season-opening loss to Hiwassee almost a month ago.
The Lions started the match with great intensity and focus, jumping all over Hiwassee College early. In what may be the best half of soccer the Classic team has played all year; the Lions defended very well and attacked through brilliant combination play to cause all kinds of problems for their opponent and create many dangerous opportunities.
The first goal came when Hayden Lavo struck a rocket from 35 yards out that hit the underside of the bar and bounced to Will Galbreath who hit another driven ball which rang the right post and found the net. Soon after, Ben Whitley scored for the Lions, assisted by Josh Maubach, extending the lead. The final goal for the Lions came from Tyler Cheek who came on as a substitute in the 30th minute. Hiwassee countered with a goal with one minute remaining in the half.
In the second half, Hiwassee found the net twice and the Lions, playing with ten men after suffering a red card, managed to hang on to the tie. All in all, a greatly improved Lions side played very well against a team that had their number a few weeks ago.
The Lions are now 3-1-1 and play against Montreat on Thursday, October 4th.
