Justice in a Broken World, Oct 24 - Nov 11, 2011
|
God designed the world to flourish, but something went profoundly wrong, and now every layer of the physical and spiritual world is corrupted. Injustice and inequality are widespread. Throughout this Chapel series, film screening, and prayer focus, we will consider the realities of international poverty and of human trafficking in the United States and will consider the role of a robust Christian imagination in the pursuit of justice in the world. |
"When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood; wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow." Isaiah 1:15-17 |

Purchase a copy of October 24 and 26 chapel speaker David Johnson’s newest book Voice of Beauty, 100% of the profits from the sale of which are donated to provide education for African school-age girls and micro-loans for women in Africa. Below are a few points David makes in challenging his readers to take action:
- To educate means “to draw out.” While many people seek education for the sole purpose of acquiring a job, few use education to draw out and discover how to make a difference in the world.
- Knowledge that does not inspire action is useless. With education comes responsibility. Education is empowering, and the responsibility of this empowerment is to take action.
-
As long as our world is full of bystanders waiting for someone else to do something, social injustices will continue. One person can make a difference:
- “Do not wait for leaders; do it alone, person to person.” – Mother Teresa
- “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” – Helen Keller
- “All that’s necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for good men to do nothing.” – Edmund Burke

David Johnson recommends the following organizations as those that offer opportunities for you to make a difference:
