Overview

In addition to the technical or academic features of our programs, we offer something that very few institutions of higher learn can supply:  A Christian worldview perspective on mathematics and computer science.  Do a person’s philosophical or religious presuppositions affect the way he views or does mathematics?  Absolutely!

Our classes are taught by professors who have many years of experience in their fields.  Because classes are small (major classes often have 5-10 students.), you can have more interaction with the professors.  You will also have much opportunity to interact with your professors out of class.

Our Commitment to You

We are concerned about you as a person.  Because our classes tend to be smaller, we really get to know all our students very well.  We want you to grow in your understanding of the fields of mathematics and computer science, and we will work with you to achieve that understanding.  We also want you to grow in the other areas of your life, especially in your relationship with God. 

You will have ample opportunity to meet with your professors outside of class.  We will be your academic counselors, but we desire also to be your spiritual mentors and friends.  We practice an open-door policy that will allow you to have free access to us whenever we are on campus.

The department faculty meet weekly for prayer.  One of our most common prayer items is to pray for students that are facing various challenges in their lives, both academic and personal.  Because of our close working relationship with our students, friendships have formed that have carried on many years after graduation.

  • Mathematics—This option provides a solid background for a student desiring to go into a math-related career or go on to graduate school in a technical field.  Courses tend to me more theoretical and analytical.  This option appeals to students who are interested in mathematics and who do not want to take a lot of computer science courses.  It allows room in your schedule for exploration of other academic areas, minors, and even a second major.
  • Mathematics-Secondary Licensure—This option provides the student with the necessary tools to teach mathematics at the secondary or middle school level.  Students graduate with a teaching credential which is recognized by nearly every state in the union.  In addition to a strong background in mathematics, this option features a package of education and psychology courses that will equip you to be a successful classroom teacher.
  • Applied Mathematics and Informatics—This option offers a hybrid between applied mathematics and computer science.  If you are interested in exploring how to use technology in practical applications, this would be the option for you.  The math courses here lean toward application more than theory.  More courses are required in this option to give you the thorough background in applications that you need to move on to success in a technical career.
  • Computer Science program—While Bryan does not offer a Computer Science major, we do have a wide variety of computer science courses which are open to students from any major, and we offer a Computer Science minor which can complement any major.
