The Bryan Opera Theatre will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta “Pirates of Penzance” Friday-Saturday, Feb. 21-22.
This delightful operetta is the tale of the young Frederic, who was mistakenly apprenticed as a pirate rather than a pilot by his “hard of hearing” nurse-maid, Ruth. Having just turned 21, he is eligible to become a full-fledged pirate; nevertheless, he announces that he loathes piracy and plans to devote his life to piracy’s extermination. Ruth plans to follow Frederic with the intention of becoming his wife, but her plans are soon spoiled when he happens upon a “bevy of beautiful maidens,” the daughters of the Major-General Stanley.
Stage Director Kimberly Keck, who will direct the performance, said, “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is a delightful comic operetta that can be enjoyed by all. It has been gratifying to see our younger students rise to the occasion in order to put on a great show.”
Cast members include Jay Carpenter as the Pirate King, Garrett Hill as Frederick, Brittany Feeser as Mabel, Randy Bright as Major-General Stanley, and Jason Gonzalez as the Sergeant of Police. Supporting roles include Bethany Sheats as Ruth, Andrew Warren as Samuel, Katie Warren as Edith, Naomi Martin as Kate, and Emily Cairns as Isabel. A 20-member chorus will support the principal cast, with accompaniment provided by an orchestra led by Music Director Dr. Mel Wilhoit.
“This is a hilarious show,” Wilhoit says, “with librettist Gilbert’s witty plot being matched with composer Sullivan’s contagious melodies.”
This operatic performance is open to the public and begins at 7:30 p.m. in Rudd Auditorium on the Bryan campus.
