A Legacy of Teaching and Impact: The Thomas Russell Story
In 2014, Bryan College established the Thomas Russell Scholarship Fund in memory of a beloved educator whose life and legacy continue to inspire generations of teachers.
Although Tom Russell primarily taught Algebra I and Pre-Algebra, his heart for teaching began with a degree in elementary education. Tom was a man of integrity and humility, known for his unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ and his servant-hearted approach to life.
Those who knew Tom remember his quiet strength and his love for others. When his wife Bev’s parents spent time in a nursing facility in Mobile, Alabama, Tom made the trip to visit them—just one of many ways he lived out his faith through service.
Beyond the classroom, Tom worked as an electrician and often hired students to help him during the summer months. These weren’t just jobs—Tom used the opportunity to mentor young people, teaching them not only electrical skills but also leadership and character.
He was a true servant leader: firm in his convictions, yet humble in spirit.
When Tom tragically passed away from cancer, the outpouring of love was immense. At his visitation, friends and former students waited for hours to share their condolences. Many spoke of how Tom had traveled to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, using his skills to help rebuild and minister to those affected.
His life was marked by selflessness, compassion, and a deep desire to serve. One attendee shared how Tom’s engaging teaching style and biblical worldview had shaped his understanding of learning and faith—an impact that mirrors the mission of Bryan College today.
Through the Thomas Russell Scholarship Fund, future elementary teachers are being equipped to make a lasting difference in the lives of their students—just as Tom did.
“It has been a blessing for us to give to this scholarship fund,” said Dave and Bev Kinsey ’73. “We invite you to join us in training the next generation of teachers who will impact future generations. This fund honors a great man who served an even greater God.”
In a special opportunity to expand this legacy, an anonymous alumnus has offered a matching challenge—every dollar given to the Thomas Russell Scholarship Fund will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $30,000.
Don’t miss this chance to double your impact and help future teachers follow in Tom Russell’s footsteps—serving Christ by serving others.
