All-In Athletics at Bryan College

Jeremy Deal

Growing up playing sports, I often heard coaches talk about being “all in.” It was about commitment, teamwork, and the understanding that every game, every possession, mattered. In many ways, this mirrors what Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 9:25-26, where he writes: “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.” This kind of dedication and focus is what we strive to instill in our student-athletes at Bryan College but with a higher calling—one that goes beyond the game and into the Christian life, focusing on the glorification of God.

At Bryan College, athletics is far more than winning championships or building impressive stats. It’s about glorifying God in every practice, game, and interaction. Our mission as an athletic department is to develop skilled athletes and shape Christ-centered men and women who will carry the lessons they learn on the field into every aspect of their lives. This is where actual “all-in” athletics come into play. It’s about spiritually, emotionally, and academically mentoring our athletes, guiding them to rely on God and lean into their faith despite challenges and setbacks.

Perseverance is one of our athletes’ key lessons, rooted in the understanding that life is full of ups and downs. As they push through challenging drills, complex practices, or tough games, they learn to persevere in faith, trusting that God has a plan for their lives. This reliance on God shapes their resilience—not just as athletes but as followers of Christ. When they face adversity, whether on the field or off, they know they’re not facing it alone.

At Bryan College, athletics is also about teamwork in its most total sense. The strength of a team comes from unity, shared goals, and a love for one another. We teach our athletes that love is not just a feeling but an action—a commitment to lifting one another, encouraging each other, and holding each other accountable. This reflects the biblical principle of loving your neighbor and mirrors the unity of the body of Christ. When our teams play, they’re more than just a group of individuals trying to win a game—they’re a family striving to glorify God together.

Evangelism and discipleship are woven into the fabric of our athletic program. Coaches teach the game and share the gospel, modeling Christ in their leadership and lives. Athletes see the gospel through mentorship, integrity, and a commitment to excellence that points back to Christ. Whether through team chapels, devotionals, or one-on-one conversations, we aim to create an environment where the gospel is heard and lived out.

All-in athletics at Bryan College means shaping our student-athletes to be responsible, hardworking, and faithful in all areas of life. It’s about more than just sports—inspiring young men and women to glorify God for a season and a lifetime. Through athletics, we have a unique opportunity to disciple and equip the next generation of Christian leaders, which is the true victory we strive for.
