It’s as unique as its name suggests. 1st Avenue Pizza, Books, and Treats has brick-oven pizza, homemade ice cream, coffee and bagels, and a bookstore. So, basically, all of your favorite things. As if that isn’t cool enough, check out the inside.
To make things even more perfect, 1st Avenue Pizza is owned by husband and wife team Alan and Katherine Garrison. They had their grand opening on June 27 – the Garrison’s 30th wedding anniversary.
Katherine Garrison worked at a library for 10 years before they moved to Dayton to be more hands-on with Monkey Town Brewing Company, which they also own. But she missed working with books, so when her husband suggested the idea of opening a pizza place with a bookstore in the front, she was thrilled. There’s a little bit of everything in the bookstore – from hardback children’s books and middle grade novels to adult fiction, self-improvement books, and cookbooks. Katherine also does the “treats” part of the restaurant. As 1st Avenue continues to expand over the next few weeks, they’ll be incorporating even more goodies – from ice cream, cookies, pies, and cakes – all homemade by her.
The pizza/bookstore/sweets combo isn’t the only thing unique to 1st Avenue. The design of thebookstore was very important to the Garrisons – they knew before the opened the store that they wanted a book arch, and a tree in the middle. “The rest, like the coasters under the counter, just came together after that,” Katherine Garrison said. Posters of books line the walls on the right side of the bookstore and the pizza area. A shelf behind the bookstore counter displays the favorite book of each of the Garrison’s immediate family members.
If you haven’t been by yet, check it out – it’s sure to become a new favorite place in Dayton.
