Dr. Matyas Cserhati Joins Bryan College Natural Sciences Faculty

Bryan College is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Matyas Cserhati as Assistant Professor of Biology for the 2026–2027 academic year.

Dr. Cserhati joins Bryan College with extensive experience in biology, bioinformatics, computer science, and higher education. His diverse academic and research background will further strengthen the College’s Biology program and commitment to providing students with a Christ-centered science education.

Strong Academic Foundation in Biology and Bioinformatics

Dr. Cserhati earned his PhD in Biology from the University of Szeged. He also holds a master’s degree in biology with a concentration in bioinformatics from Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest, Hungary, a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and a master’s degree in religion from Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

His research interests are rooted in a lifelong fascination with the molecular foundations of life. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Cserhati has focused on bioinformatics, molecular biology, and computer science, with particular emphasis on DNA data analysis and bioinformatics algorithms.

Among the highlights of his research career, Dr. Cserhati was part of a team that assembled the whole genome sequences for Neanderthal and Denisovan populations. He has also conducted research in Biblical taxonomy, commonly known in academic circles as baraminology.

International Teaching Experience

Dr. Cserhati brings significant teaching experience from institutions in both Europe and the United States. He has taught bioinformatics and programming courses at Eotvos Lorand University and the University of Szeged in Hungary. In the United States, he has taught computer science at Concordia University Irvine and mathematics and statistics at California Baptist University.

“Dr. Matyas Cserhati brings a wealth of experience in bioinformatics research, a vibrant faith, strong young-earth creationist beliefs, and a humility to learn,” said Dr. Lyle Smith, who served as Dean over the Natural Sciences Department during the 2025–2026 academic year. “Although Dr. Cserhati’s primary focus will be teaching Biology courses, he may also contribute to Computer Science in the future.”
