Honoring a Legacy, Investing in the Future

1975 Cross Country

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

For many Bryan College alumni, the lessons learned on cross-country trails have lasted far beyond graduation day. From pushing through grueling workouts to celebrating personal victories and rebounding from setbacks, the sport became more than just running—it was a life-shaping experience.

“Some of the most meaningful moments of my time at Bryan came while running cross country,” shared alumnus Mike Wood (’78). “It wasn’t just about races. It was about perseverance, character, and the friendships we built along the way.”

The Influence of Coach Jake Matthes

At the center of those experiences was Coach Jake Matthes. Known for his grit, encouragement, and unwavering commitment, Matthes left a profound mark on generations of Bryan runners. Alumni describe him not only as a coach but also as a mentor who inspired them to push harder and believe in themselves.

Establishing a Fund to Honor His Legacy

To honor his legacy, Wood and fellow alumnus Eric Clarke (’80) have launched the Jake Matthes Cross Country Fund. The goal is clear and purposeful: to fully endow the fund at $25,000, providing lasting support for Bryan College Cross Country and Track & Field athletes.

A Golden Anniversary of Championship Grit

This year makes the effort especially meaningful. It marks the 50th anniversary of Matthes’ 1975 team that won the NCCAA Cross Country Championship. Many of those runners had little competitive experience before Bryan, yet together they made history—a testament to Matthes’ leadership and the spirit of determination he instilled.

🏆 Spotlight: 50 Years of Championship Grit

Dubbed a “scrappy, determined group,” the 1975 team entered Bryan with little competitive experience, yet they rose to the challenge and made school history.

Their perseverance, teamwork, and Matthes’ inspiring guidance continue to shape Bryan Cross Country and Track & Field, reminding alumni and current athletes alike of the power of commitment and determination.

Carrying the Torch Forward

Today, the tradition continues under the guidance of Coach Jasper Wilson, who has both the men’s and women’s teams thriving. Alumni point out that supporting the fund is about more than honoring the past; it’s about investing in the future of Bryan runners for decades to come.

“Every stride we took back then carried lessons that stayed with us,” Clarke reflected. “Now we have the chance to give back and help today’s athletes carry that tradition forward.”

An Invitation to Join the Effort

With Homecoming on the horizon this October, alumni and friends of the program are encouraged to join the effort and help reach the $25,000 goal.
