Living out the Bryan Mission
By Dr. Kathryn Saynes, Vice President for Academics
The world doesn’t need more degrees. It needs more disciples.
It needs men and women whose education leads to service, whose service leads to impact, and whose impact points to Jesus. That’s the heart of Bryan College’s mission: Educating students to become servants of Christ who make a difference in today’s world.
To see how that mission comes to life, let’s break it down.
Education is at the heart of what we do. But at Bryan, education is more than grades, tests, or degrees. It’s about equipping students for a life that honors Christ—pursuing not just knowledge, but wisdom.
The book of Proverbs reminds us that wisdom is of greater value than gold or silver. Yet wisdom isn’t meant to be hoarded; it must be shared. From Moses’ charge in Deuteronomy to teach God’s commandments to the next generation, to Jesus’ Great Commission—“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20)—education is not only about acquiring knowledge but about passing it on, living and teaching truth in community.
At Bryan, professors and staff walk alongside students in a place where education transforms hearts as much as it trains minds.
Education alone is incomplete unless it leads to service. Scripture is clear that we are created with purpose: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).
Jesus modeled servanthood, reminding His disciples that true greatness in the Kingdom of God comes not from seeking power but from humbly serving others (Mark 10:43–45).
This spirit of service is alive on campus. It is experienced when a professor prays with a student, when classmates encourage one another, and when staff invest time outside the classroom. But living as servants of Christ means carrying that mindset into every community and workplace we enter.
We see this in action as Bryan students volunteer in local ministries, participate in mission trips, and engage in internships that combine career preparation with service. Service isn’t optional for the believer; it’s the natural outflow of knowing Christ.
The final piece of our mission is to make a difference, but not in the way the world defines it. Scripture points us to a higher calling: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9–10).
The world chases wealth, fame, and influence, yet, but Jesus flips that narrative. Micah 6:8 gives us a simple but profound framework: “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” That’s how we make a difference; not by compartmentalizing faith, but by integrating it into every part of life know that our work has eternal significance when surrendered to Christ
Ultimately, only Jesus gives meaning to our education, purpose to our service, and eternal impact to our influence. Colossians 3:23–24 reminds us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Living out this mission isn’t about achievement. It’s about students who use their internships not just to gain skills but to serve with excellence and integrity. It’s about graduates who shine the light of Christ in every sphere of influence.
At Bryan, we don’t just prepare students for careers; we prepare them for callings; callings that change communities, restore hope, and reflect the love of Christ wherever they go. Because the world still needs difference makers who serve with humility, lead with wisdom, and live for Jesus alone.
