Saturday, May 31, the pool on the Bryan College campus opened to the public; it has already begun to draw crowds of excited families and individuals within its first week of opening.
David Holcomb, Bryan’s scholarship fund director, who has played a significant role in getting the project underway, said the community pool is “a collaboration between four entities: the Rhea Economic and Tourism Council, Bryan College, YMCA, and the City of Dayton.”
The idea came out of a desire to collaborate with the surrounding community in a long-term plan (within five years) for the building of a YMCA-run community and student center near the new entrance of the college to serve the citizens of Rhea County as well as Bryan students. This concept would allow for many internship and ministry opportunities for college students, all while training them for potential careers in exercise and health science. The community pool concept also provides additional incentive for businesses considering relocating to Rhea County.
This is the first collaborative initiative of its kind to build upon the relationship between Rhea County and Bryan College, Holcomb stated. He referenced the fact that the availability of the campus pool “gave an opportunity for other organizations to unite to bring health, wellness, and recreation to our community through total usage of the pool.”
The pool will remain open through Monday, Sept. 1, with an abbreviated schedule after county schools start Aug. 5. The daily usage fees for Monday – Thursday hours of operation are $3 for children, $5 for adults, and $15 for families.
