Ms. Olivia Ellis Having earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music (from Carson-Newman University and the University of Tennessee, respectively), Ms. Ellis is completing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma. All of her degrees have emphasized piano performance and pedagogy. It is during her years at college, she says, that she first knew that teaching the passion of music to others was her calling.
She has taught numerous courses in piano and music theory and appreciation, with teaching experience from the University of Tennessee and the University of Oklahoma, in addition to Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. She has also presented at conferences and workshops and has personally performed nationwide
“I am looking forward to this new chapter of my journey and am excited to share music with the Bryan community!” Ms. Ellis said. She will be teaching Music Theory I and III, Methods of Teaching Piano, Senior Music Seminar, and piano lessons. She looks forward to interacting closely with students, saying, “Most of my classes will be small or one-on-one interaction, and I am excited to get to know all of the music students in such a setting.”
When asked what she is most excited about teaching students, she replied, “To succeed in anything, I believe you have to be passionate about what you do. The best musicians must be passionate, committed, and have a heart for what they do. I want to share my own enthusiasm for music with my students and help them achieve their musical goals.”
It is Ms. Ellis’ hope that as Bryan’s newest music instructor she can help students to develop the unique talents that they already possess, and then build on them by teaching her students new skills “so they are able to fulfill whatever career they choose.”
