February 11, 2016 – On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20, the Bryan Opera Theatre will present a lively rendition of nineteenth-century composer Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera Hänsel and Gretel, based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale of the same name.
This opera follows the story of the siblings Hänsel and Gretel. As a punishment for shirking chores, they are sent by their stepmother Gertrude to gather berries in the Ilsenstein forest, which turns out to be the home of the wicked Gingerbread Witch and her house made of sweets. Quite the adventure follows, testing the brother and sister’s courage and cunning.
Cast members include Madison Keck as Hänsel, Katarina Duong as Gretel, Everett Sell as Peter, Emily Haverkorn as Gertrude, Alexis Reese as the Witch, and Naomi Baskin as both Sandman and the Dew Fairy.
Director Kimberly Keck remarked, “I am excited about this production because it has been a challenge in many ways. The music in Hänsel and Gretel is definitely the most difficult repertoire that the Bryan Opera Theatre has ever performed. Additionally, this is the first time that any of the cast has ever been in an opera production. I’m very proud of how they have taken on such a challenging work in order to present it to our community.”
