Ashton E. Alexander embraced God’s grace of salvation and was baptized at an early age. Passionate about Christ and the church, he was a faithful member of his home church, Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church.
At the age of twelve, Rev. Alexander acknowledged his call to the ministry at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Memphis, TN. His church, family, and friends welcomed and supported his call. Cognizant of the seriousness of the task, Rev. Alexander attended numerous conferences to propel and sharpen the gifts which he had been given by God. At 21, Rev. Alexander was successfully ordained at New Emmanuel M.B. church in Chattanooga, TN.
Rev. Alexander graduated from Bryan College in Dayton, TN, where he double majored in English Literature and Political Science. While at Bryan, Rev. Alexander was the captain of the debate team. Additionally, Rev. Alexander served as the President of the Faith Caucus for the Tennessee College Democrats, and the President of the Bryan College Democrats. Moreover, he was the Brynoff English Scholar while at Bryan. During the summer of 2013, Rev. Alexander was selected to participate in two nationally competitive academic institutes: the Summer Institute of Literary and Cultural Studies at Wheaton College in Norton, MA, and the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute in Chicago, IL. He used this time to strengthen his intellectual abilities and prepare for the demands of graduate school. While in East Tennessee, he joined New Emmanuel Baptist church in Chattanooga, TN, under watch care.
Rev. Alexander is particularly interested in theology, literature, rhetoric, and politics. Though these may seem like an odd combination, they all help to nurture and cultivate his thinking and philosophy of life. Among the many authors he reads, Toni Morrison, Bell Hooks, Katie Cannon, Cornel West, and John MacArthur especially and deservedly stand out. When he is not reading, he enjoys exercising, writing, and watching professional wrestling for the drama and physicality.
Rev. Alexander was overwhelmingly elected as Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at the age of 22, making him the church’s 8th pastor. He accepted the call to pastor and looks forward to serving Pilgrim Rest — a church with a rich history and big outreach. Pastor Alexander will keep the mission statement of Jesus recorded in Luke 4:18 in mind as he leads Pilgrim Rest. Like Jesus’ ministry, he wants to create a place where the broken, bruised, and those in bondage can be blessed.
In addition to pastoring, Pastor Alexander is a M. Div candidate at Mid America Baptist Theological Seminary and plans on graduating in May. During his tenure at Pilgrim Rest, the church has experienced spiritual and numerical growth, and the church has placed greater focus and intention on disciple making and evangelism.
Pastor Alexander is happily married to the love of his life, the former Tiara Rias. A newlywed couple, they have been enjoying serving the Lord and maturing in their love together. They now have a newborn baby boy named Ashton E. Alexander, Jr.
