Biography
Dr. David Barnes is Bryan College’s Associate Professor of Business & Economics. He teaches economics, finance, and other undergraduate and graduate business courses. With over 25 years of experience in higher education, military service, business, and ministry, Dr. Barnes brings a unique, real-world perspective to the classroom. He engages students’ own experiences to encourage applying what we learn and to explore how faith shapes our understanding of economics and our impact on the world.
David earned his Ph.D. by combining studies in Economics and Public Administration at the University of Delaware, where he researched the role faith has as human capital in developing economies. He also holds graduate degrees in regional planning, theology, and joint military operations. Before coming to Bryan, he served in a wide range of roles across the U.S. and Europe, having lived in 15 different places over the last 30 years, working as a professor, pastor, NATO-adjacent Air Force chaplain, small business owner, and regional economic development director.
His approach to academic work centers on practical, real-life issues, with publications and presentations in public policy, international development, effective teaching, and religious freedom. He regularly attends international conferences and has led in a variety of global contexts.
Outside the classroom, David is active in local ministry as pastor of the historic Spivey Memorial Methodist Church here in Rhea County. For relaxation, he enjoys reading (especially sci-fi and fantasy novels), hiking trails with his dog Frodo, listening to music, and just appreciating the slower pace and welcoming spirit of small-town life in Dayton and the larger Chattanooga area where we live.
