Porter new admissions director

Aaron Porter is quickly learning he made a good decision when he accepted the offer to become Bryan’s admissions director.
While the early days of his tenure have been devoted to getting acquainted, learning his way around campus, and helping tie up loose ends for the incoming freshman class, he is thinking long-term about reaching enrollment goals for Vision 2020.
“Vision 2020 has very lofty goals and Dr. Livesay is passionate about them,” Mr. Porter said. “I love a challenge, and I believe the staff is up to the challenge. I want to do everything I can to meet those goals.” Part of that plan is to grow enrollment to 1,200 traditional students, about a 50 percent increase from this past academic year.
Mr. Porter earned a degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management at King College in 2006, and a Master’s degree in adult education and organizational training at Tusculum College in 2008. While at Tusculum he began working part-time as a telecounselor in the admissions department and quickly was brought onto the full-time staff.
“I would get comfortable doing a job, then ask for more responsibilities,” he said. His can-do approach to work helped him work his way up the organizational chart until he was named admissions director this past January.
As he saw changes coming that he was not comfortable with, he began rethinking his decision and ultimately applied for the Bryan position.
“My mentor and friend knew Michael Sapienza (Bryan’s vice president for enrollment management) and recommended me to him,” Mr. Porter explained. “I was attracted to the position because of my mentor’s recommendation and because I saw an opportunity for spiritual growth for myself as well as an opportunity to help college students grow spiritually.”
Mr. Sapienza said he believes Mr. Porter has the combination of experience and enthusiasm which will serve the college well. “Aaron comes highly recommended, and I appreciate his desire to make a contribution to the Bryan community,” he said. “His work record is outstanding, and I believe he has the imagination and leadership skills we need as we seek to encourage students to attend Bryan.”
The Clinton, Tenn., native said his first priority is to get to know his staff personally and professionally to best use their strengths in admissions efforts. At the same time, he is working on a needs analysis to develop a plan to reach the enrollment goals of Vision 2020.
“But the first thing is to work to complete this year’s class and start working toward next year’s class,” he said.
