Chapel series to spotlight C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis, one of the most influential Christian thinkers and writers of the 20th century, will be the focus of a chapel series Oct. 3-7.

Mr. Ben Norquist, director of faith & mission, said the three chapel programs will be supplemented by a performance of   “C. S. Lewis on Stage” by the actor Tom Key, who has performed the biographical production internationally.
 
“For a significant number of us at Bryan, our faith and thinking were shaped by the legacy of C. S. Lewis,” Mr. Norquist said. “As we approach the 50th anniversary of his passing (in 1963), we thought it was appropriate to profile him in chapel.”

October 3-7 (Mon-Fri)

  • Monday, 10 a.m. Chapel:  Drs. Ron Petitte and Whit Jones will speak on Lewis’ life and his book Mere Christianity, a classic apologetic text.
  • Wednesday, 10 a.m. Chapel:  Several faculty and staff members will read selections of Lewis’ writings, explain their contexts, and comment on why the selection is significant to them.
  • Thursday, 7:30 p.m.:  A highlight of the week will be the presentation of “C. S. Lewis on Stage,” by actor Tom Key, who wrote the biographical work based on Lewis’ writings. Mr. Norquist pointed out that Sheldon Vanauken, a friend of Lewis, said of “C. S. Lewis on Stage,” “Tom Key became C. S. Lewis for me.”
  • Friday, 10 a.m. Chapel: Mr. Key will present the debut performance of a stage presentation of other aspects of Lewis’ life and writings.
Mr. Norquist explained that the focus on Lewis is the first of what is hoped to be an annual examination of notable Christians such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, G.K. Chesterton, Billy Graham, and Dorothy Sayers.
 
All events in this series will be held in Rudd Auditorium and are open to the public without charge.
