Kelly (Luther) Stultz
Career Church Music Director
“God used Bryan and the extra courses, like orchestration and conducting, and professors to build me up for what I’m doing now,” she said. “Bryan over prepared me for graduate school, where I was developed to teach even more. I was able to teach as a graduate assistant while I earned my Masters in Music with a vocal emphasis, and got my feet wet in so many areas.”
After finishing her masters, she taught full-time at Temple University, and as an adjunct at Bryan and Lee University. She was then asked to serve as the music director for Hixson Presbyterian Church in Hixson, Tennessee.
Today, Kelly serves as the Director of Music and the Arts for First Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Among other tasks, she leads all worship music and the choir, plans and organizes music, leads an instrumental ensemble, handbell group, upper children’s choir and oversees a 4 and 5-year-old choir.
“When I was at Bryan, I said I would never do any of these things,” said Kelly. “But God knew what I was being groomed for. As much as I gritted my teeth in the midst of rigorous classes, I thank my professors now for challenging me. I now direct all of my music professors – but that is the heart of our professors at Bryan. They want their students to outgrow them. That’s true mentoring – wanting your student to grow and excel. The professors just want the wings of their students to fly.”
Kelly lives in Hixson, Tennessee, with her husband, Andy, and two boys.
“My job is a calling, and I wouldn’t suggest doing it if it’s not,” she said. “But I love it. It’s my life – and it’s a great life.”
