The Lady Lions basketball team won their first-ever national tournament victory Wednesday, downing the Lady Wildcats from Bethel (Tenn.) College 73-68.
Bryan Coach Matt Bollant said his team “came out ready to play. It was a high-scoring game to start, but I didn’t think we were defending like we should. I called a time out and talked with them and they tightened up the rest of the half.”
The Lady Lions led by nine at intermission, and built the lead to 17 in the second half. “After that, I felt like they got tired and a little complacent,” Coach Bollant said.
Bethel narrowed the gap to two before Brittany Swanson hit two free throws to increase the margin to four.
“We are really thankful to be in the ‘sweet 16,’” Coach Bollant said. “I want to give the glory to God. We are truly blessed.”
Leading players for the Lady Lions include junior Brittany Swanson, who scored 21 points; Ashely Gray, “who played well for a freshman in her first national tournament” and tallied 17 points; and junior Sarah Coffman who scored 16 and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Lady Lions face the NAIA No. 1-ranked Cedarville University Lady Yellow Jackets in the tournament’s second round on Friday, March 10, at noon Central, 1 p.m. Eastern time.
